Big Goals

Big Goals We help leaders build their skills and confidence to lead motivated, high performing teams. https://big-goals.newzenler.com/courses/leadandinfluence

We work with our clients to develop leadership skills and confidence and develop teams that are built on trust, where team mates are able to challenge one another, innovate and hold each other accountable to achieve their business goals. We do this by building and reinforcing self awareness, emotional intelligence and communication skills that enable leaders and their teams to have difficult conve

rsations and develop the best ways of working together and driving outcomes. In this era of virtual and hybrid teams these skills and approaches are even more important for maintaining productivity and connection. Since saying farewell to my podcast co-host Kristy-Lee, we haven’t been standing still. We’ve taken time to reflect on what this podcast can truly offer and how it can better support you to grow your skills, confidence, and impact as a leader.

As a starting point, we’re exploring leadership through the lens of one of Juliet’s favourite books, Where the Light Gets In. Over the coming weeks, Juliet Robinson and Antoanela Safca will unpack the ideas within it and translate them into practical, real-world leadership application.

In this first episode of the series, Juliet Robinson and Antoanela Safca explore:

✔️The perspective shifts Ben Crowe introduces in the book
✔️ How expectations shape the way we see ourselves and others
✔️ The tension between caring for people and reshaping ourselves to meet external expectations
✔️ And the familiar challenge of people-pleasing in leadership

You don’t need to have read the book to follow the conversation, but if you’re looking for something to challenge your thinking and shift how you approach leadership, it’s one worth adding to your reading or listening list.

We’d also like to hear from you. How do you navigate perspective shifts in your leadership? How do you manage expectations - both your own and other people’s?

Over the past six months, I’ve recommended one book more than any other: Where the Light Gets In by Ben Crowe.

It’s much more than a book about high-performing athletes. It offers powerful insights into how we think, what drives us, and how we can live and lead with greater purpose and fulfilment.

The lessons have sparked countless conversations and lightbulb moments with the leaders and teams I work with.

Inspired by the book, I’ve launched a short podcast series with Antoanela Safca, where we explore its key ideas through a leadership lens.

In our first episode, released this week, we unpack expectations:
• The difference between goals and expectations
• How expectations influence our work and relationships
• What to focus on instead

A strong facilitator can make or break your team workshop. It’s not about perfectly planned slides or polished frameworks.

✔️ It’s about reading the room.
✔️ Knowing when to pivot.
✔️ And being willing to sit in the discomfort long enough for insight to land.

Because every team is different. What unlocks one team can completely miss another.

Workshops shouldn’t just tick a box. They should change how a team works, long after the session ends.

If you’d like to chat about creating that space for your team, I'd love to have a free, no obligation chat. Secure your spot here: https://calendly.com/julietrobinson/15min

I speak about difficult behaviour and how to address it effectively, but sometimes we’re so caught up and under pressure, that we don’t even stop to consider what’s unacceptable, or realise that we have the power to put a stop to it.

Passive aggressive “jokes”. Walking on eggshells. Eye rolling, sarcasm, tension when one person joins the room, or someone draining the energy of the whole team.

Just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s acceptable. This week notice the patterns first, then address them. Good luck and let me know how you go!

If leadership is feeling heavy right now, you don’t need to carry it alone or wait for things to shift. Let’s work through it together in a focused 1:1 session and troubleshoot what’s going on.

‘This is going to be a difficult conversation. Wish I could avoid it.’

Do you ever find yourself thinking that?

Dreading a conversation that you know will drain your energy and maybe still not get the outcome you were hoping for?

I can’t say whether you’ll ever enjoy difficult conversations (I still don’t) but you might find that there are ways to make them…
• Easier
• Less draining
• More effective
and isn’t that an improvement already?

I’d love to share with you my Difficult Conversations Framework, a resource I’ve developed over time to support the leaders I work with.

Hot off the press: research (https://www.sciencefocus.com/news/hasslers-accelerated-ageing) is showing that difficult people may be doing more than draining our energy. They could actually be accelerating biological ageing and impacting our health.

Stress caused by difficult behaviour is not neutral. It affects our focus, wellbeing, performance, and according to recent research, potentially even our longevity.

The good news? You do not have to simply put up with difficult behaviour at work. There are practical ways to address it before it derails you, your team, and your culture 👉https://big-goals.newzenler.com/courses/difficultpeople

When we build real connection in our teams, we create the conditions for people to feel safe enough to be vulnerable.

And when people feel that sense of belonging, they show up fully - not holding back, not self-protecting, not expending energy trying to fit in.

That’s when real performance happens.

Try this in your next meeting: don’t speak first.

As leaders, we often jump in to fill the silence or guide the conversation. But when we speak first, the team often stays within the direction we’ve set.

Pause instead.

You may get more honest opinions, better ideas, and stronger engagement from the team.

What would change if you gave people a little more space to think and speak first?
