2 Processes that Regulate Sleep 🤓

1️⃣ Homeostatic sleep drive, and
2️⃣ Circadian rhythm.

The sleep drive is like a pressure that builds the longer you are awake, and then releases when you are sleep. The circadian system is made up of internally driven rhythms.

The longer you are awake, the greater the drive toward sleeping. The sleep drive in babies and children are very strong and builds quickly. The sleep drive has a powerful influence over your baby’s nap schedule because babies and toddlers build up pressure to sleep over just a short amount of time. Napping relieves the pressure.

What is disturbed sleep? 🧐

✅ Abnormal sleep schedules (going to bed too late, sleeping in too late in the morning, napping at the wrong times)

✅ Brief sleep durations (not enough sleep overall)

✅ Sleep fragmentation (waking up too often)

✅ Sleep deprivation (no naps or brief naps)

✅ Prolonged latency to sleep (taking a long time to fall asleep)

✅ Too Active sleep (lots of tossing and turning)
