🇦🇺 Victoria's 2026–27 Skilled Migration Nomination Program – Latest Updates!

On 13 October 2026, the Victorian Government announced important updates to its 2026–27 Skilled Migration Nomination Program, affecting applicants seeking nomination for Subclass 190 and Subclass 491 visas.

📌 Key Updates:

💰 1. New ROI and Nomination Application Fees

The following fees will apply for the 2026–27 program:

- Registration of Interest (ROI): AUD $60
- Subclass 190 nomination application: AUD $180
- Subclass 491 nomination application: AUD $180

A 10% GST applies to applicants in Australia at the time of payment. Nomination application fees are only payable after receiving an invitation and submitting a nomination application.

📊 2. Greater Transparency in ROI Selection

Victoria has published further information about its ROI selection process, including the weighting of factors under the Victorian Points Test, priority industries and additional industry-specific considerations.

🔄 3. Existing ROIs Must Be Resubmitted

ROIs submitted in previous program years will not automatically carry over to 2026–27. Applicants wishing to be considered for nomination must submit a new ROI once the program opens.

📅 4. Program Opening Date Yet to Be Announced

The official opening date for the 2026–27 Victorian Skilled Migration Nomination Program has not yet been confirmed.

📅 Subclass 189 invitation round
The next Skilled Independent visa invitation round is scheduled for 15 October 2026, following the postponed September round. Make sure your Expression of Interest (EOI) is accurate and up to date.

💻 Subclass 407 system issue
Some subsequent entrant applicants experienced a sponsorship verification error. A fix was scheduled for 10 October. If you still encounter the error, contact ImmiAccount Technical Support.

🎓 Student visa changes
Rules effective from 2 October 2026 affect applications made in Australia and the inclusion of family members. Limited exemptions apply. Applications lodged before this date remain assessed under the previous rules.

🩺 ANMAC assessment updates
A new application portal, assessment names and revised fees are expected later in 2026. The launch date has not yet been announced. Existing applications will transfer without requiring reapplication or an additional assessment fee.

Waiting for a skilled visa decision? This update could affect your application.

From 19 September 2026, new processing orders apply to subclass 482 and selected permanent and provisional skilled visas.

Here’s what you need to know 👇

✅ The highest priority applies to occupations defined in the directions within:
🏗️ Construction
🏥 Healthcare
📚 Teaching
🌾 Agriculture
🐟 Aquaculture and fishing
⛏️ Resources
🛡️ Australia’s law enforcement and defence interests

✅ Subclass 482 Specialist Skills applications have a dedicated priority group.

✅ Your location when you applied and whether your application is combined with another person’s can affect your priority.

✅ The changes also cover earlier applications that had not been finally determined when the new directions commenced.

Affected subclasses:
482, 186, 187, 189, 190, 191, 489, 491, 494, 887 and 888.

📍 Applying in Australia
Holders of the listed temporary visas must apply for a Student visa from outside Australia and be overseas when it is granted.

🎓 Already hold a Student visa?
You must meet an exemption to apply for another Student visa while in Australia.

👨‍👩‍👧 Including family
Partners and dependent children can be included at lodgement only if an exemption applies. New subsequent entrant applications after Student visa grant are no longer permitted.

✅ Your current Student visa is unaffected. Student visa applications lodged before 2 October 2026 remain subject to the previous rules.

🏥 Health Insurance for Visa Holders
If your visa is subject to Condition 8501, you must maintain adequate health insurance while in Australia. Make sure your policy provides appropriate cover and always check your individual visa conditions in VEVO.

🎓 Student Visa Onshore Restrictions
Updated rules affecting Student (subclass 500) and Student Guardian (subclass 590) applications took effect from 25 September 2026. Certain visa holders are restricted from lodging these applications while in Australia and may need to apply from outside Australia.

🚨 Australia Migration Update: New processing priorities for certain provisional and permanent skilled visa

Ministerial Direction 122 took effect on 19 September 2026 and determines the order in which covered applications are considered. Importantly, it changes processing priority only, it does not change visa eligibility requirements or the skilled occupation lists.

Applications receiving the highest processing priority include primary applicants working in:
🏗️ Construction
🩺 Healthcare
🎓 Teaching
🌾 Agriculture, aquaculture and fishing
⛏️ Resources
🛡️ Occupations related to Australia’s law-enforcement or defence interests
The remaining order is:
2️⃣ Other primary applicants who were in Australia when they applied
3️⃣ Primary applicants outside Australia whose application is not combined with another person’s application
4️⃣ All other covered applications
Applications properly combined with a primary applicant’s application receive the same priority as the primary applicant.
Direction 122 covers visa subclasses 186, 187, 189, 190, 191, 489, 491, 494, 887 and 888.

A new Gazette notice registered on 21 September 2026 confirms that the Australian Taxation Office will acquire visa-related data from the Department of Home Affairs for the 2026–27 to 2028–29 financial years. The program is expected to involve records relating to approximately 9 million individuals each financial year.

The information may include:
📍 Contact and address history
📄 Visa grant history and visa status
✈️ International arrival and departure movements
👥 Sponsor and migration-agent details
🎓 Student visa education-provider information
🛂 Visa subclass details

The program is intended to support tax and superannuation compliance, improve risk-detection systems, identify potential fraud or misuse of the visa framework, cancel ABNs held by ineligible persons and support compliance under Australian foreign-investment rules.
