🌏♻️ Celebrating Logan’s diverse communities through waste education. What a fantastic day at World of Cultures 2026 at Kingston Butter Factory, QLD on Saturday! Our Cleanaway team was there as part of our waste education partnership with the City of Logan Government, connecting with residents from culturally and linguistically diverse communities and sharing practical information about recycling and waste.

More than 5,000 people came together to celebrate the many cultures, languages, music, food and traditions that make Logan such a vibrant community. We spoke with around 580 residents throughout the day and handed out waste education resources in multiple languages. We also had plenty of fun with our waste-themed co****le game, with around 150 people, mostly kids, having a go at sorting everyday items into the right bins.

We had some great conversations about what can and can’t go in Logan’s kerbside recycling bins, as well as how to safely dispose of e-waste, butane cans, construction waste and other materials.
It was especially rewarding to speak with people who are new to Australia and may have come from countries with very different recycling systems. These conversations help us understand what information communities need and how we can make waste education more accessible.

We also connected with community leaders and organisations, with more waste education sessions already being planned across Logan.

Our people are coming together to mark Wear It Purple Day and show their support for LGBTQIA+ young people.

Teams are getting together for lunches, wearing purple and creating their own moments to celebrate inclusion, allyship and belonging.

Our approach to diversity and inclusion is about creating a workplace where everyone can bring their whole self to work, feel respected and valued and have the opportunity to belong.

Wear It Purple Day gives us an opportunity to put that commitment into action, come together as a team and show our support.

Cleanaway continues to strengthen diversity in our workforce, with women representing 25.8% of team members in FY26.

Waste and resource recovery has traditionally been a male-dominated industry and building a more representative workforce takes sustained action across every part of the organisation.

This means challenging perceptions of what a career in waste looks like, creating pathways into operational and frontline roles and supporting women to develop and progress throughout their careers.

Our focus is on continuing to remove barriers, broaden pathways into waste and resource recovery, and create an environment where more women can build long-term careers with us.

For the past 10 years, State Operations Manager Allison Belshaw has played a key role in supporting some of Australia’s most important operations through her work with Cleanaway’s Australian Defence contracts team. Allison is known for her steady leadership, strong operational knowledge and commitment to delivering for customers and colleagues alike. This May, she celebrated 10 years with Cleanaway.

In 2024, Cleanaway was announced as Defence’s Resource Recovery and Waste Management contractor for Queensland and Western Australia in a six-year partnership with the potential to extend to 2035. Operational from 31 March 2025, the contract supports Defence events, exercises and waste management services while contributing to the Federal Government’s 80% waste diversion target by 2030.

Allison is part of the team helping bring this partnership to life across QLD and WA, supporting service delivery, operational continuity and resource recovery outcomes for Defence sites.
Account Director - Defence Anthony Chapman said, “Allison is an integral member of the Defence management team and is highly respected both internally and by her Defence stakeholders. We are very lucky to have Allison as a key member of the team.”

Not all plastics are recycled the same way.
Hard plastics like bottles and containers are different from soft plastics like:
🍞 Bread bags
🍫 Wrappers
🥗 Scrunchable packaging
🛍 Plastic bags
Soft plastics are generally plastics you can scrunch in your hand.
Our 2026 Recycling Behaviours Report found that many Australians want to recycle soft plastics, but confusion remains around where they should go. Hint: It’s not in the yellow lid bin!

🎉 Congratulations to Allan Smith on 20 years with Cleanaway!
From starting as a chemist after moving from the UK to Australia, to leading our Townsville Technical Services branch today, Allan's journey has been built on teamwork, leadership and a commitment to keeping people safe.

For Allan, the best part of the job isn't just solving complex customer challenges. "It's the people," he says.

It’s not always that simple.
Our 2026 Recycling Behaviours Report found 64% of Australians have felt misled by soft plastics packaging that appears recyclable but isn’t.
A recycling symbol on packaging doesn’t always mean it can go into your household recycling bin.

Helping the next generation become recycling champions starts with making learning fun. ♻️💚

Our Logan Sustainability team joined Canterbury College's Under-8s Day alongside local community organisations to help young learners discover what belongs in their recycling and garden organics bins.

Through our waste-themed co****le game and recycling colouring activities, kids learned how to sort everyday items correctly, while our team explained trickier materials like batteries, e-waste and food waste. By the end of the session, they left with practical recycling knowledge they could take home and share with their families.

In just two hours, we connected with 344 students, parents, guardians and teachers, making it one of our busiest and most rewarding community education events.

A big thank you to Canterbury College for inviting us to be part of such a fantastic day. We look forward to bringing more recycling education to schools and community events across City of Logan Government.

You’ve spoken. We’ve listened. ♻️ Australians want better solutions for soft plastics recycling.

Our 2026 Recycling Behaviours Report found:
🔄 94% would use a new soft plastics recycling scheme if available
♻️ 93% support a national kerbside collection service for soft plastics

Soft plastics like bags, wrappers and flexible packaging are part of everyday life, but they need different recycling solutions.

That’s why Cleanaway is working with partners to explore new ways to collect and recycle soft plastics at scale.

Through Cycleback Plastics, our joint venture with Viva Energy, we’re progressing plans for an advanced recycling solution that could help turn soft plastics back into new food-grade packaging.
