Respectfully, I’m not interested in letting my nervous system stage a full-blown invasion of my prefrontal cortex just because I forgot to set a boundary and ate a piece of toast for lunch. 🙄

But also… that’s exactly what happens.

When your nervous system is already running hot, the small things stop being small. A missed meal. A yes that should have been a no. A notification at 9pm. Suddenly your body is treating Tuesday like a survival situation.

It’s not dramatic. It’s biology.

Your prefrontal cortex - the part responsible for rational thinking, decision making, and not sending that email - is literally the first thing to go offline when your stress response kicks in.

Which is why “just calm down” is the least helpful advice in the history of advice.

The nervous system doesn’t respond to logic. It responds to signals.

The right movement. The right breath. The right patterns - repeated consistently - are what actually move the needle.

That’s what we work on inside Control Your Calm. One weekly session. Movement and mindset. And a growing library for the days when Tuesday feels like a threat.

Logic vs. The Nervous System: Why change feels so dangerous.

Why do we stay in jobs, relationships, or habits that drain us? Because to your nervous system, familiar = safe.

When you try to step into a new, healthier pattern, your brain sees “Unknown Input.”

To a stressed system, the unknown is a threat. So, it triggers a stress response to pull you back to the “safety” of the old, exhausting habit.

Breaking the cycle requires more than just “thinking positive.”

It requires:
1. Pattern recognition.
2. Finding micro-safety in the new.
3. Regulation over resolution.

Save this post for the next time you’re feeling frustrated with your progress. You’re doing better than you think. 🤍

Your brain is a spectacular little gremlin who has decided that 2am is the ideal time to revisit every mildly uncomfortable thing you’ve ever said or done.

The work lunch from three years ago. The email you sent too fast. The joke that didn’t land.

Filed, catalogued, and ready for viewing.

But this isn’t a you problem. It’s a pattern problem. And patterns can be interrupted, rewired, and genuinely sorted (not just using sheer stubbornness to suppress it into submission).

That’s exactly what I do in 1:1 sessions.

If you’re completely holding it together on the outside while your brain runs a true crime podcast about your social life on the inside - link in bio, clarity calls are open.

Unpopular opinion…

What people call a “midlife crisis” is often just a woman getting honest with herself.

About what she wants.
What she doesn’t want.
And the patterns she’s been following that were never really hers to begin with.

For years we’re conditioned to be agreeable, accommodating, responsible and supportive.

Eventually something shifts and the brain starts asking a very reasonable question:

“But what about me?”

That moment isn’t a crisis.

It’s clarity.

And clarity is usually the first step to changing the pattern.

Also… if that clarity turns you into a slightly feral, boundary-setting swamp witch who suddenly stops tolerating nonsense…

that’s probably a healthy sign.

Your brain is designed to conserve energy.

So it runs yesterday’s programming.

Same thoughts.
Same reactions.
Same habits.

Until something interrupts the pattern.

A new decision.
A new behaviour.
A new environment.

Change doesn’t start with willpower.

It starts with awareness.

Once you see the pattern, you can rewrite it.

The 3am brain is a special kind of chaos.

Suddenly every conversation you’ve ever had needs to be analysed.

Your life choices.
Your future.
That mildly awkward thing you said in 2017.

At 3am your brain becomes extremely convincing that everything is urgent and catastrophic.

Then morning arrives and the same brain is like…

“Actually it’s fine.”

The 3am version of your brain is not a reliable narrator.

The way you talk to yourself matters more than you think.

Your brain is always listening.

So if the voice in your head sounds like:

“I’m terrible at this.”
“I can’t do this.”
“This is too hard.”

Your brain goes:

“Got it. We’re terrible. Let’s shut this operation down.”

The push-ups in this reel are just an example.

But the same thing happens everywhere in life.

At work.
In relationships.
When you’re trying something new.

Your brain responds to the instructions you give it.

So maybe stop speaking to yourself like a grumpy PE teacher from 1997…

and try being your own hype person for a minute.

See what happens.

Waking up one day and choosing to chase joy.

To make choices everyday to further that goal.

Finding elegance in the beauty of feeling a full range of emotions and moving the body through it.

And especially being okay with having moments of cursing drivers out for using their indicator because ffs it’s not there for decoration Chad!

It’s balance and layers
