After 15 consecutive years as the #1 national university in the U.S. News & World Report rankings, Princeton has fallen to #2 👀

The culprit? A new “earnings by major” factor that replaced the old graduate debt metric, comparing grad earnings within each major to the national average. In the new scores (out of 100), Princeton landed at 99, just barely edged out by the new #1. Harvard held #3 with a 96.

Thinking about how rankings should shape your college list? Let’s talk strategy.

Brown just cut 2 questions from its application. 👀

For fall 2027, Brown University is dropping “In one sentence, Why Brown?” and “What three words best describe you?” for first-year and transfer applicants. It’s the first change to the required supplemental essays since 2023.

Why? Brown’s admissions dean says feedback from students, prior applicants, and counselors pointed to two problems: the supplements were longer than most peer institutions’, and the “Why Brown?” answers overlapped with other questions. He also said applicants “overthought” the three-word prompt, hunting for a clever combination instead of answering genuinely.

Yale and Cornell also dropped their “Why Yale?” and “Why Cornell?” essays this cycle. But Brown says that trend played no role in its decision. Its changes are based on feedback specific to Brown.

The four supplements that remain ask about what brings you joy, a class you’d teach, your approach to the open curriculum, and how your upbringing has shaped you.
Applying to Brown or other Ivy League schools? Fewer prompts means every response matters more. Start early. ✍️

Stanford’s famous roommate prompt is back, but this is not the place to list your perfect grades, awards, or biggest accomplishments.

So, how should you approach it?
👉 Think like you’re actually talking to your future roommate.
What do you genuinely enjoy doing? What would you want to do together? What parts of your everyday life would you be excited to share?

The goal is to show your personality, interests, and everyday life. Not rewrite your résumé ❌

Stanford has plenty of other parts of the college application where you can highlight your academic achievements and extracurriculars. Use this supplemental essay to show the person behind them.

The more specific, genuine, and personal your answer is, the more you give admissions readers a sense of who you are beyond your accomplishments.
📌 Save this if you’re working on your Stanford application or supplemental essays!

Columbia University just made a major change to its Core Curriculum 📵

Starting this fall, every Literature Humanities and Contemporary Civilization section (two of the most iconic parts of Columbia’s Core) now prohibits electronic devices in class.

Thinking about applying to Columbia or another top school? We help students build standout applications that go beyond the numbers.

Princeton’s Class of 2030 acceptance rate just dropped to 4.0% — officially the lowest in the university’s history 😳

Here’s what the numbers show:
📊 46,618 applications received (an all-time high)
✅ 1,414 enrolled students
🎓 76% yield rate — the highest in recent years, meaning more admitted students are choosing to enroll
📉 Only 29 students got in off the waitlist
🌍 12.9% international students (down 1.2 points from last year)
💰 71% of the incoming class projected to receive financial aid

If competition at elite schools keeps intensifying like this, your college application strategy can’t just be “good grades and a few essays.” You need a plan that makes you stand out in a pool of 46k+ applicants.
