14 years ago we opened the doors of Niche! 🙌

Our team have been reflecting on the incredible support we have received from various clients and colleagues during this time. Without them, the business we see today, with 5 offices and 14 staff, would not have been possible. 🤝

We've been working closely with Brighton Council in Tasmania to prepare a structure plan for southern Tasmania's premier intermodal logistics and industrial precinct: the Brighton Industrial Hub 🏭

Mayor wrote a great piece in the Mercury last week setting out the case for integrated planning, using Brighton as the example!

Do you know:
- Brighton Industrial Hub supports more than 1000 jobs!
- Industrial-related sectors account for 83% of Brighton's economic output, 85% of export value and 72% of value added within the municipality.
- Between 2019 and 2024, Brighton's GRP and employment grew to outperform both southern Tasmania and the state as a whole!
- Brighton remains Tasmania's youngest municipality and continues to lead the state in first-home ownership, showing how the area is growing on both the industry and housing side at once

The structure plan for the Brighton Industrial Hub is currently out for advertising - let us know if you want to find out more!

Our policy work has officially been ‘Incorporated’ into the planning scheme! 👏

Following Councils adoption of the Southern Grampians Small Town Strategy, our office was pretty impressed to hear that the scheme had been amended, including the STS as a fully fledged Incorporated Document!!

The STS provides Council with a clear framework to guide future housing and infrastructure development, ensuring it meets the needs and expectations of the community. 📄

As an Incorporated Document, key elements from the strategy are now implementable by Council. This is a great step in protecting the development of these towns into the future.

It’s always a real moment to be recognised for the leadership our team shows in the built form space.

At Niche we work on both greenfield and infill housing projects, but most have a particular focus on planning for density done well. 💭

Reflecting this, Nicola was recently invited by Plus Studio during Melbourne Design Week to sit on a panel [together with the State Government Architect!] to provide planning perspectives on what it actually takes to deliver density well in Victoria. 🗣️

Nicola also presented a breakout session at the NZPI 2026 Conference discussing ‘Housing That Belongs’, exploring the role planners play in providing housing in an ever increasingly constrained market 🎤

If you want to learn more about her presentations or discuss how you can execute density well in your project, please reach out to Nicola.

Permit Approved ✅

We are very excited to have received planning permit approval for our client Henley Homes for a multi-lot residential subdivision in Mickleham, which sits within the Craigieburn West Precinct Structure Plan. 🎉

The Appleton Grove development will support 194 residential lots ranging from 126sqm to 817sqm, and 1 superlot that will be used for a future apartment building.

The plan contains significant open space and shared pedestrian and bike paths that will connect the community to the proposed town centre just east of the precinct. 🚴

It has been great to continue our work in the City of Hume and support the growth of Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

One of our favourite residential masterplan projects has hit a new milestone! 🎉

The Moremac team has officially launched the first release within Precinct A at Kingsfield, Sunbury.

This site was carefully planned to optimise open space, encourage community and allow access to future amenities.

Having worked with the teams at Moremac and Hume City Council over the past 6 years to secure planning permits for this site, we are extremely excited to see it come to market! 👏

Happy National Volunteer Week! 💫

We are celebrating the amazing members of our team that volunteer their time, alongside their already packed schedules, to support the future of the planning profession. 🌟

Amy volunteers as the Deputy Convener of the Committee, working with the team to create events that connect fellow emerging planners and provide guidance as they start their careers in planning. 👏

Over in WA, Tamara is the Chair of the Professional Development Committee and a member of the Education, Connection and Excellence Strategic Committee. In these roles, she helps to support the Council and Executive team in driving strategic policy priorities, ensuring the institute remains an effective advocate for the community. 🎉

Nicola sits on the Board and chairs the Innovation, Sustainability and Technology committee, helping champion new ideas and emerging policy areas that encourage sustainable urban development. ♻️

We are so proud of our team for volunteering for roles that further the planning profession!

It’s move-in time at The Village! 📦

Located within the Middleton Field township in Daylesford, this collaboration between and brings thoughtfully designed, sustainable and affordable housing to regional Victoria. 🌱

Our team supported this project by securing planning permits for the overall Middleton Field neighbourhood development and The Village. What makes this project especially meaningful is its partnership with , delivering homes to women and children at risk of homelessness with funding from the Big Housing Build.

We had the opportunity to tour the site last week and were incredibly impressed by the beautifully crafted townhouses. We look forward to seeing the community grow as more tenants move in! 🤝
