"Great training experience. Felt safe and warm to share and learn." LENS Course Participant.

There is no better type of feedback for us than knowing that our facilitators have created a warm space for our participants. With the warmth, we're able to stretch our understandings of culture, to grown our capacity in cultural responsiveness and feel courageous enough to reflect and share in the group setting.

At Mahana Culture we talk a lot about spaces.

About dignifying spaces.

About acknowledging spaces.

And more specifically, about the spaces-between which we often refer to as Vā - as explained by Samoan Poet and Writer, Albert Wendt.

We use this Indigenous enquiry of Vā and the spaces-between in our learning and development programs as a process of Reconnecting, Re-Imagining and Recreating on the journey of Cultural Responsiveness.

Our Elder Gregg Morris so generously shares his work of Vā and thoughts in his PermaQueer TEDx Nurture: Teu le Vā.

We agree.

Poet, writer and activist, the greatness of Maya Angelou was in her ability to tell a story, and her power to connect and to move people was in her ability to tell her own story.

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”

What if we told you there was a cultural story in us all? What if our cultural stories were built around the tales of our past, of our birth but also of the choices that we made, and continue to make?

Our ESSENCE Workshop is a place for uncovering these stories. Our cultural stories are dynamic and empowering, they allow us to celebrate difference and find the sameness that connects us.

And for the first time, Mahana Culture is excited to be launching our 2022 series of workshops aimed at individuals who are looking to take their first steps in the journey of culturally responsive practice.

What defines the work that we do?

There are a number of definitions that bring to life Culturally Responsive Practice, making it easier for us, and our partners as we journey together.

Defining Cultural Humility, or even understanding the role of the Dignitarian is not the crux of the work, but it makes for a far better equipped journey if we can clearly define the nuances of cultural work.

Our LENS Immersion and LENS Introduction course workbooks are loaded with pre and post learnings that do just this, as well as a comprehensive list of words, phrases and theories with definitions that support Mahana Culture's frameworks of CRP.

with Meadows Primary School in Melbourne's North.

The School is wonderfully diverse with 18 different language backgrounds, 6% of students considered refugee or new migrants
and 70% percent of the 310 students across Foundation to Grade 6 have English as a second language.

“Cultural training within schools has often focussed on gathering knowledge of specifics around a particular cultural group, usually a minority. However, the work that Mahana Culture is doing is far more inclusive. With the lens of culturally responsive practice we’ll be better equipped to recognise the dynamic nature of 'what is culture' and nurture the relationships between students, families that is contextually relevant to our school community,” commented Anthony Potesta, School Principal.

Already the school has seen new teacher and staff relationships form and the introduction of our Blood Birth Choice framework being used to better understand culture of self and other.

At Mahana Culture, we're looking forward to seeing the outcomes this new partnership creates for the Meadows P.S community. We'll be back in Broadmeadows in May for Day 2 of the LENS Immersion.
