Good afternoon Lions and Lionesses.

A fantastic day today for our Fitzroy Brisbane Lions Historical Society Museum at Marvel Stadium today with the placement of the “Coaching Philosphies” of our late and great Len Smith.

This book proudly now sits in Len’s Memorabilia Cabinet and is a documentary legacy of his football thoughts and views on life from his perspective in which he wrote in his exercise book from mid to late 1950’s to the mid 1960’s.

The pages of his exercise book have been placed into a one-off hard copy cover and backing.

Len was a former Fitzroy Football Club player and our Team of Our Century Coach.

Len was also inducted into the Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame this year.

Many thanks to his grandson
Wayne Harmes (the first recipient of the Norm Smith Medal in 1979 for his victorious Carlton side) and the extended Harmes and Smith families for the placement of the book in Len’s cabinet.

Our Museum is ever so richer for Len’s book as we celebrate the life of our Leonard Victor Smith.

Many thanks to Robert Lochhead who has today placed on loan to our Museum a 1995 Roygirl Cheerleading Outfit.

A fantastic piece of memorabilia from our 2nd last year as a club in our own entity.

A fantastic gesture from Robert, who has placed many items on loan to our Museum within the last year.

Good Evening Lions and Lionesses.

Approximately 214 Players played at least 1 game for our Fitzroy FC in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1884 to 1896.

My co-researcher Connors Roberts and I have recently re-booted our hunt for photos of these 214 players to display on a single board at our Museum at Marvel Stadium (much like our 5 boards of our 1,157 VFL / AFL Fitzroy FC players that played at least 1 Senior game from 1897 to 1996).

As at today, we have 159 photographic images of our VFA players.

We have only 55 players to locate photos of.

Connors and I have quite a few leads for our 55 “missing men”.

It is on in earnest !.

We owe it to our Fitzroy Football Club and these men and their families to celebrate their contribution to our great club in our early years in the VFA.

Without our pioneers, our Fitzroy Football Club would never of flourished.

If anyone can assist with photo images for our “missing 55”, please drop us a line in our in-box.

Good Evening Lions and Lionesses.

Today I had the pleasure of meeting Sandra Wyatt (née O’Hehir), daughter of the late Edna O’Hehir (née Wilson).

Her family donated today a remarkable collection of five Fitzroy Football Club membership cards to preserve an important piece of her family’s history.

This is Sandra’s story:

Edna was born in Rose Street, Fitzroy, and was a passionate supporter of the Fitzroy Lions.

Her father George Wilson gave her five Fitzroy membership cards, dating from 1910, 1911, 1912, 1913 and 1914.

Of particular significance is the 1913 membership card, the year Fitzroy won the premiership.

After Edna’s passing, the family decided that donating the cards was the best way to ensure these treasured pieces of Fitzroy history were preserved and available for future generations to appreciate

These 5 membership Cards are now today proudly displayed in our Museum Trophy Cabinet.

Good Evening Lions and Lionesses.

It’s a sad day at our Fitzroy FC as our ex-player Ian Miller passed away yesterday at the age of 76.

Ian played 80 games for Fitzroy (for 33 goals) from 1974-1977 and wore the number 3 jumper for our Royboys.

Ian was recruited to our Fitzroy FC from the Perth FC (in the WAFL) and won the 1972 Sandover Medal with the Demons (Perth).

Condolences to the Miller family and all of Ian’s many friends and acquaintances.

RIP “Serge”.

Below is the 72nd birthday story I posted on Ian on our page on the 16th of December 2021.

Good morning royboys and roygirls.

Today we celebrate the birthday of Ex Fitzroy player Ian Miller, who celebrates his 72nd Birthday today.

Ian was recruited to our Fitzroy FC from the Perth FC (WAFL) for the 1974 VFL Season, after playing 132 games, for 135 goals for Perth, from 1967-1973, playing in Perth’s 1968 winning Grand Final side against the East Perth FC, being named in the All Australian Side in 1972 and winning the Sandover Medal in 1972 as well.

So Ian was very experienced and well credentialed by the time he made his way to our Junction Oval.

Ian made his Fitzroy FC debut in our opening round loss in 1974 by 40 points to the
St Kilda FC at their Moorabbin Oval, gathering 7 possessions in his number 3 jumper.

Ian played a further 15 Home and Away games in his debut season, kicking 6 goals averaging an impressive 23 possessions, with his best statistical game being our Round 5 draw against the South Melbourne FC at their Lake Oval gathering 31 possessions.

Ian played 64 from a possible 66 Home and Away games from 1975-1977, kicking 27 goals and averaged 18 possessions, with his best possession game being our 13 point defeat of the South Melbourne FC by 13 points at our Junction Oval Round 8 of the 1975 VFL Season with Ian netting 32 possessions.

Ian played his final game for our Fitzroy FC in our 41 point defeat of the Geelong FC at our Junction Oval in the final round of the 1977 Season (Round 22), gathering 12 possessions, which was the final game in charge by our our Senior Coach Kevin Rose who had 3 years at the helm of our Fitzroy FC.

Ian returned to the West in 1978, this time playing for the East Perth FC, playing 64 games, for 31 goals from 1978-1980, playing in East Perth’s winning Grand Final side in 1978, as they defeated his old side Perth by 2 points, with Ian winning the Simpson Medal for being judged Best on Ground.

Ian also returned to his original WAFL side Perth and coached them from 1982 to 1984.

Ian was selected on the Half Forward Flank in the Perth FC Team of the Century in 1999, was a 2008 Western Australian Hall of Fame inductee, joining the West Coast Eagles FC in 1990, being on their match committee, Chairman of Selectors from 1993 to 1999 and being asked back to the club in 2002 in a Player Services Co-Ordinator Role, hosting families for new draftees, in a role he still holds today.
