Most business owners have a strategy. Very few have one that actually holds up when the day to day gets busy.

The difference is almost never about the quality of the thinking. It is about whether the strategy has been translated into something the business can actually act on. A clear position in the market, a revenue model that improves profitability rather than just adding workload, a focused set of priorities rather than a list of everything that could be done. These are the things that separate a strategy that delivers from one that sits in a document and quietly gets forgotten.

The part that collapses most often is accountability. Most strategies are created once and rarely revisited. There is no review rhythm, no one owns the initiatives, and the moment the business gets busy, which it always does, the strategic work is the first thing that gets pushed to next week.

A strategy that works is not a smarter plan. It is a plan with the right structure around it to make sure it actually gets executed.

Alex, this is exactly what we love to hear!

There is a real moment that happens when a business owner goes from knowing what needs to change to actually having a clear plan to change it. The uncertainty lifts, the decisions get easier, and the work starts moving in a direction that actually means something. Hearing that it has already made a difference in lead generation is genuinely rewarding for the whole team.

Thank you for trusting us with it!

The Golf Institute had everything it needed to grow. What they were missing was the structure to make it happen without the owners carrying all of it themselves.

Membership had plateaued, the sales process was inconsistent, and cash flow came in peaks and troughs that made forward planning genuinely stressful. There was even an entire mezzanine space sitting unused while the business was searching for room to expand. Sometimes the opportunity is already inside the business, it just takes a different set of eyes to see it.

We introduced a proper sales process across the whole team, moved the business to a direct debit membership model, brought in additional coaching and admin support, and turned that mezzanine into a golf performance fitness offering that created a profitable new revenue stream from day one.

Membership grew from 70 to 170 active members. Sales conversion quadrupled. And for the first time the owners had predictable monthly income and the headspace to actually focus on leading the business rather than keeping it afloat.

Growth was always there. It just needed the right foundation underneath it.

We're excited to introduce client lead Leigh Saffin at Candour Strategy

Leigh's spent years in management consulting and startup growth, working with major enterprise clients across Australia, the US and the UK, and leading growth at a Melbourne tech startup that scaled to $5 million in annual revenue.

But ask Leigh what actually drives him, and it's not the big logos. It's the founders. The ones who've put everything on the line, working nights and weekends to build something that's theirs.

Leigh's here to make sure that effort actually pays off. Not just in the numbers, but in time back, freedom, and a business that finally works for you instead of the other way around.

There is something deeply Australian about trying to figure it out yourself.

We back ourselves, have a go, and feel quietly uncomfortable paying for guidance when we reckon we can work it out on our own. And honestly that attitude is part of what makes Australian business owners so resilient. But it is also the thing that quietly holds a lot of them back.

The value of having a great mentor or business coach is genuinely hard to see until you have experienced it. It is not a luxury or an admission that you cannot handle things. It is the difference between making decisions alone with incomplete information and making them with someone in your corner who has seen the same problems play out dozens of times and knows exactly where they lead.

The businesses that grow the fastest are almost never the ones that figured everything out alone.

You are not looking for more complexity. You are looking for less.

By the time most business owners reach out for support, they have already tried to figure it out themselves.

They have read the articles, watched the videos, maybe even brought someone in who handed over a framework and called it done.

The best solutions are usually straightforward, practical, and so obvious in hindsight that the only question is why nobody did it sooner.

A cleaner quoting process. A proper sales conversation. A system that actually gets used because it was built around how your team already works rather than how someone else thinks it should.

The planning part is rarely where businesses struggle. Sitting down and mapping out where you want to go, what you want to build, which opportunities you want to chase, that part feels productive and most owners are good at it.

The harder part is what comes after. Saying no to work that does not align. Dropping the initiatives that felt important three months ago but are quietly draining energy without moving the needle. Sitting down with the numbers honestly and adjusting when the evidence says something is not working.

Strategy without that discipline is just intention. And intention without ex*****on is just a document.

The default assumption is that more hours equals more success. And in the early stages of a business that is often true, there is a season where you have to be everywhere and do everything just to get the thing off the ground. But that season has a use by date, and a lot of business owners miss it. They keep pouring hours in long after the business needed something different from them, and wonder why the growth is not following.

The honest answer is that the hours you put in matter far less than what you are doing with them. A business owner spending 60 hours a week firefighting, answering emails, and doing work their team should be doing is not building a business. They are maintaining one. And there is a ceiling on how far that gets you.

The shift happens when the hours start going into the right things. Strategy, relationships, decisions that actually move the needle. That is when time spent and results achieved start to line up properly.

Van had built something genuinely special with Community Moves.

A fitness community for the over 50s built around connection, movement, and belonging. But expansion had stretched him thin, everything was living in his head, and the culture that made the business worth joining was becoming harder to protect the bigger it got.

We built the systems, SOPs, sales training, and leadership frameworks the business needed to scale without losing what made it great.

Van went from being the answer to every question across every site to actually running the business as an owner.

The member base grew by 46 percent across three locations with the culture completely intact.

We are growing and we are looking for the right person to grow with us.

Candour Strategy is hiring an Executive Assistant to support our Directors with day-to-day priorities, client delivery follow-through, and internal work. The majority of the work is internal, not client facing. You will keep the Directors moving by turning messy inputs into clean, finished outputs, managing follow-through, and using strong commercial judgement and high-level AI skills. This is a true EA role with commercial weight. We need someone who can work in the grey, protect the Directors' time, and produce work we would put in front of a client.

With the right person, the role can grow over time.

Around 15 to 25 hours a week, remote, and genuinely varied across real Australian SMEs. If you are organised, process driven, write clearly, and know your way around tools like Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, we would love to hear from you!
