ANGLOGOLD ASHANTI: THE NEW ECONOMICS OF GLOBAL GOLD MINING

A high gold price can make a mining company look attractive.

But sophisticated investors know that the real story lies deeper.

How much can the company produce?
At what cost?
For how long?
And can it convert today's commodity windfall into sustainable long-term value?

AngloGold Ashanti offers an excellent case study.

In 2025, the company reported:

• 3.09 million ounces of gold production
• $9.9 billion in revenue
• $2.91 billion in free cash flow
• $6.29 billion in adjusted EBITDA
• 36.5 million ounces of gold Mineral Reserves
• $1.8 billion in dividends declared

But financial performance is only one dimension.

HG&W's latest review examines the strategic transformation of AngloGold Ashanti from its South African roots into a geographically diversified global mining group operating across four continents.

We explore:

1. Portfolio Strategy — why geographic diversification can strengthen resilience.

2. Obuasi — how the redevelopment of a historic Ghanaian mine illustrates asset renewal and technological modernization.

3. Reserve Replacement — why exploration is effectively the mining industry's version of product development.

4. Operational Excellence — why productivity and cost control matter even more when commodity prices are high.

5. Technology — how automation, tele-remote equipment and digital mine planning could reshape mining.

6. Social Licence — why community trust is increasingly an operating asset.

7. ESG & Risk — why tailings, climate, safety, human rights and artisanal mining are strategic business issues—not simply sustainability topics.

8. Capital Allocation — how management balances dividends, growth projects, exploration, acquisitions and shareholder returns.

The strategic lesson extends beyond mining:

A resource-rich business does not automatically create sustainable value. It needs disciplined capital allocation, operational excellence, innovation, stakeholder trust and a long-term growth pipeline.

That is the conversation at the heart of the latest HG&W review of AngloGold Ashanti.

🎓 Remodeling Nigeria's Educational System | H.G&W StateSTRAT

Education is the foundation of national development. But as the world changes, education systems must evolve with it.

Through StateSTRAT, H.G&W is exploring pathways to remodel Nigeria's educational system—with a focus on building an education ecosystem that is more responsive, innovative, inclusive, and aligned with the needs of the future.

The conversation goes beyond classrooms and curricula.

It is about rethinking how Nigeria develops human capital, prepares young people for the future of work, equips educators, leverages technology, and connects education with economic opportunity.

Key areas of focus include:

🔹 Future-ready curriculum and skills
🔹 Digital transformation in education
🔹 Teacher development and capacity building
🔹 Entrepreneurship and employability
🔹 Industry–education collaboration
🔹 Innovation and technology adoption
🔹 Access, inclusion, and educational equity
🔹 Stronger links between education and economic development

StateSTRAT provides a platform for strategic thinking around the policies, systems, and partnerships required to drive meaningful transformation at the state level.

Nigeria's future depends on the quality of the people we prepare today.

It is time to rethink education. It is time to build for the future.

🚀 THE IGBO APPRENTICESHIP MODEL: AFRICA'S UNDERSTATED ENGINE OF ENTREPRENEURIAL GROWTH

What if the future of entrepreneurship development requires us to look beyond conventional business schools and learn from indigenous economic systems?

The Igbo Apprenticeship Model (Igba-Boyi) offers a compelling case study.

Its architecture is remarkably simple:

An established entrepreneur → mentors an apprentice → transfers practical knowledge → builds networks → supports enterprise creation → produces another entrepreneur.

The result is more than skills acquisition.

It can become a mechanism for human capital development, business incubation, wealth creation and intergenerational knowledge transfer.

Recent academic research has linked the model with entrepreneurship development, SME growth, skills acquisition and community economic development.

More recent scholarship is also examining its relevance to innovation and its historical role in the economic resilience of southeastern Nigeria.

But the model is not without challenges.

Issues around standardisation, financing, safeguarding, settlement arrangements, technology adoption and inclusion—particularly women's participation—must be addressed if the model is to evolve successfully.

H.G&W's latest thought leadership paper explores:

"The Igbo Apprenticeship Model: An Indigenous Blueprint for Entrepreneurship, Wealth Creation and Sustainable Business Growth"

The bigger question is not whether the model should remain exactly as it is.

It is:

How can we preserve its entrepreneurial DNA while adapting it for a digital, AI-driven and globally connected economy?

That conversation could have implications far beyond Nigeria.

BUA GROUP: BUILDING THE INDUSTRIAL BACKBONE OF NIGERIA

A conglomerate becomes strategically interesting when its businesses begin to reinforce one another.

That is what makes BUA Group worth studying.

Founded in 1988, BUA has evolved into a diversified Nigerian industrial group with interests spanning foods, cement, infrastructure, mining, ports, steel, logistics and real estate.

Our latest HG&W review examines the strategic logic behind this expansion.

We explore:

• The transformation from trading to industrial manufacturing
• Vertical integration across agriculture, processing and distribution
• BUA Foods and the business of food security
• Cement capacity and Nigeria's infrastructure opportunity
• Ports and logistics as strategic industrial infrastructure
• The ambition to develop integrated steel production
• Local manufacturing as a route to greater economic resilience
• Procurement and supply-chain management at scale
• Strategic partnerships as a catalyst for industrial expansion
• The governance, capital and ex*****on challenges facing large conglomerates

The financial performance provides important context.

In 2025, BUA Foods generated approximately ₦1.77 trillion in revenue and ₦518.4 billion in profit after tax, while BUA Cement reported approximately ₦1.18 trillion in revenue and ₦356 billion in profit after tax.

The real strategic question, however, goes beyond financial results:

Is BUA simply building a large conglomerate—or is it building an interconnected industrial ecosystem capable of supporting Nigeria's next phase of economic development?

That is the question at the heart of this HG&W review.

🚀 THE NEXT GLOBAL BUSINESS GIANTS COULD COME FROM AFRICA

For decades, the dominant question was:

"How can global companies succeed in Africa?"

The more important question for the next decade may be:

"How can Africa-led businesses become global companies?"

Africa already has a significant base of large enterprises. McKinsey Global Institute estimates that the continent has at least 345 companies with annual revenues of $1 billion or more, collectively generating more than $1 trillion in revenue. It estimates that these companies could potentially unlock more than $550 billion in additional revenue by 2030 through productivity improvements, new markets and other growth strategies.

Yet the bigger opportunity may be building the next generation of companies capable of moving from:

Local → National → Regional → Continental → Global.

That journey will require more than entrepreneurial ambition.

Africa-led businesses will need to strengthen:

• Scalability — building systems rather than founder-dependent operations
• Technology — using digital platforms and AI to leapfrog constraints
• Capital — accessing the right financing at each stage of growth
• Talent — developing world-class managerial and technical capabilities
• Governance — building institutions capable of surviving beyond individual founders
• Innovation — turning local insight into products that can travel globally
• Regional integration — using Africa's increasingly interconnected markets as a platform for expansion

Africa's diversity is also a strategic consideration. There is no single "African consumer"; successful companies need granular understanding of countries, cities, income groups and local preferences.

H.G&W's latest thought leadership paper explores this emerging opportunity:

"Africa-Led Businesses: Building the Next Generation of Global Enterprises"

The future of African enterprise should not be measured only by how much foreign capital enters the continent.

It should also be measured by:

How many globally competitive companies emerge from Africa?

The opportunity is not simply to build businesses for Africa.

It is to build businesses from Africa for the world.

⚡ THE FUTURE OF BUSINESS IS BEING BUILT IN DATA CENTRES

What if the next major competitive advantage for your business isn't another app, product, or marketing campaign—but the infrastructure powering your digital world?

Data centres are becoming the backbone of AI, cloud computing, digital commerce, cybersecurity, customer experience, and business resilience.

And their impact is about to become even bigger.

H.G&W's latest thought leadership paper, "The Data Centre Revolution: How Digital Infrastructure Is Shaping the Future of Business," explores how data centres are transforming the way organizations think about:

🔹 AI and digital transformation
🔹 Business resilience and continuity
🔹 Energy and sustainability
🔹 Cybersecurity and data sovereignty
🔹 Customer experience
🔹 Investment and new business ecosystems
🔹 Future workforce capabilities

The International Energy Agency projects that global data-centre electricity consumption could roughly double to around 950 TWh by 2030. AI is one of the major forces behind this expansion.

The question for business leaders is no longer simply, "Where is our data stored?"

It is:

"Does our digital infrastructure give us the capacity to compete in the future?"

📘 Read the full H.G&W insight and explore the business implications of the data-centre revolution.

JULIUS BERGER NIGERIA: THE BUSINESS OF BUILDING NIGERIA'S FUTURE

Infrastructure is rarely just infrastructure.

A road can reduce the cost of moving goods.
A bridge can connect markets.
An airport can attract investment.
An industrial facility can create productive capacity.

That is why Julius Berger Nigeria Plc presents such an interesting business case.

In HG&W's latest review, we examine how one of Nigeria's leading engineering and construction companies has built competitive advantage through:

• Engineering and technical expertise
• Long-term institutional reputation
• Large-scale project ex*****on
• Construction technology and innovation
• Operational resilience in a volatile market
• Public-private infrastructure partnerships
• Sustainability and responsible construction
• Financial discipline and shareholder value creation

The company's 2025 performance adds another important dimension. Revenue grew by 34.1%, while profit before tax increased by 38.5% to ₦40.95 billion. Shareholders later approved a ₦6.8 billion dividend.

But the strategic question goes beyond financial performance:

Can companies like Julius Berger help close Nigeria's infrastructure gap while simultaneously creating sustainable shareholder value?

Our review explores the business model, the opportunities, the challenges and the strategic lessons for executives, investors, policymakers and entrepreneurs.
