The government has just announced the ATO credit card ban has been delayed to 30 June 2027.

Credit cards were due to stop working for tax payments from 30 November. Small businesses now have until the end of the financial year.

The government is funding the gap so the ATO can keep accepting cards while it consults on alternatives.

Good outcome. The question is why the consultation came after the announcement, not before.

Here we go again. Another day, another hit on small business.

After 30 November the ATO will no longer accept credit cards for tax payments. It follows the ban on card surcharges, with the ATO saying merchant fees should not be passed to the community.

Plenty of small businesses use a credit card to bridge a tax bill when a customer pays late. That option disappears, on top of rising costs, red tape, payday super and high rates.

Here are three tips to cushion the blow from a high interest rate environment.

Compare your rate online. If yours is off market, call your lender and ask for a reduction. This alone has saved clients thousands.
Park spare cash in your offset and run income through it. Check your lender's restrictions first.
Cut non essential subscriptions and put the savings onto the loan.

As widely expected, the RBA has raised rates another 0.25%, taking the cash rate to 4.6%.

The highest in 15 years, and the fourth rise this year. Inflation is near 3.5% against a 2 to 3% target.

The quarter percent adds:

$500,000 loan: about $104 $700,000 loan: about $146

Part two covers how to shield yourself from rising rates.

This is how we helped this client make a very easy $137,000.

No shares, no property, nothing complex.

About $1 million in cash in a new SMSF, and $1.5 million more across other entities earning close to nothing.

He didn't want market exposure, so we set up three accounts giving him term deposits across eight banks.

Did you know the government tells you how much of your super pension you must withdraw each year?

Once super is in pension phase, you must draw a minimum each year:

Under 65: 4%
65 to 74: 5%
75 to 79: 6%
80 to 84: 7%
85 to 89: 9%
90 to 94: 11%
95 and over: 14%

Save this one for later.

Did you know your children could inherit a tax bill from your super?

A 90 year old widow, about $400,000 in super. If it passed to her adult sons, they face a tax bill of about $54,000.

She drew it out now, tax free at her age, into a term deposit in her name. Slightly more income tax each year, nothing for her children to pay.

The government is banning card surcharges from 1 October, but is it really saving consumers any money?

But banks keep charging businesses to process card payments, and those fees don't disappear. Businesses absorb them or build them into prices.

Instead of a surcharge on your receipt, everything costs more, including for people paying cash.

Saving money, or hiding the cost?

We saved this client about $27,000 in superannuation death benefits tax.

70, widowed, just under $400,000 in super, about 90% of it taxable.

If his daughter inherits it, the tax free part passes to her tax free. The taxable part is taxed at 15%.

So: a withdrawal and re-contribution strategy. Draw $390,000 out, put it back as a personal contribution, and 99% becomes tax free.
