The Agile Project Manager

The Agile Project Manager The world is changing faster than ever. Are you ready? We are prioritising tools and templates over relationships and human interaction.

I am passionate about all things that involve change and people, and have worked as a project and change manager since 1999. I founded a coaching business in 2011, and since then have been looking for ways I could “converge” my passions for projects and change and human behaviour. I feel that in this increasingly complex world, we are losing the human aspect of project and change management. It’s

getting harder to take the time to meet with someone face-to-face to understand their concerns when there are a million spreadsheets waiting to be filled in and a new process that now needs to be followed. My goal with The Agile Project Manager is to provide simple tools and techniques to assist project professionals to achieve project success. And these tools and techniques are all about you, because that is where the biggest difference can be made.

I believe resilience is not just a mindset but the ability to embrace new tools and practices that make us stronger – just like trying a new exercise to build muscle. It feels awkward at first but ends up being totally worth it! I explore this and more in this month's Stand Up. Click below to read more, and let me know what you think.

Each month is a bite-sized slice of the year – an occasion to recalibrate where needed and reinforce the positives. I suggest pausing each month to check in on our goals, discover issues whilst they're still small, and of course celebrate the wins. Reflections are incredibly useful to effectively ‘mark the spot’ in your memory with meaningful, actionable thoughts. Read more...

My latest Strengths in Uncertainty interview: Ellen Cresswell. Ellen has recently moved from a senior leadership role to a business owner, and it was wonderful to interview her and learn how she has used her Strengths during this uncertain time.
I've known Ellen for years, and we thoroughly enjoyed our conversation - I hope you do too!

A new year brings new beginnings, however I like to think that every moment throughout the year presents an opportunity for a new beginning. Welcome to my December Stand Up. Let me know how your year has started out.

Welcome to the October Stand Up! Where I share what I've been up to. This month centres around adopting vs adapting new habits.

I'm excited to be part of the Pretty Agile team as a SAFe Program Consultant. I've already run two classes, and I'm loving working with some of Australia's most experienced SAFe practitioners. This collaboration is a highlight of 2020 for me, and I'm looking forward to 2021!

Emma Sharrock, SAFe Program Consultant Emma has been coaching Agile teams and leaders as a boutique Agile consultancy since 2011, and began supporting teams of teams as they explored SAFe concepts in 2016. Her support for the launch of a release train for a Telco client in 2018 prompted her to be...

Excited to share my first guest post by the amazing Helen Palmer. I interviewed Helen as part of my series and we could have talked for hours. We have both worked in the project delivery space and have experienced the challenges of delivering complex change. We agreed that Project Managers and Change Managers don’t always play that well together.

In her article Helen shares her thoughts on how this relationship can be improved. Simple actions that can make a big difference. I would love to know what you think - what actions have you tried? What else would you add?

Project Managers and Change Managers CAN play nicely together. Guest author Helen Palmer shares her thoughts on how to create a positive relationship.

Learner - an awesome strength at the best of times, and a handy strength in the worst of times. Welcome to the next instalment of Strengths in Uncertainty!

It's no surprise I learned heaps in my interview with Helen Palmer as she shared how she's leaned into her Learner and Intellection Strengths to deal with the uncertainty of Covid-19. I know you will enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed interviewing!

Specialising in organisational change and team development, Helen Palmer uses her Learner and Intellection Strengths to thrive - especially in uncertainty.

Chatting to a few fellow project managers today, we agreed that expecting a plan that gives certainty (i.e. dates) is an unrealistic expectation. We are experiencing a period of ambiguity that is unprecedented, and while a Gantt chart makes everyone feel better (extra points if it's printed and laminated), it means nothing when the situation is changing so rapidly. I'm looking forward to seeing the plan like everyone else, but I definitely won't be breaking out the laminator, but rather assessing options to continue to deal with change.

How do you cope with ambiguity?

I absolutely loved my interview with Charlotte Blair. An experienced Strengths coach I only connected with in the last year, Charlotte has been an incredibly supportive part of my Strengths journey. Her energy and ability to connect others stand out in regular times, and has amped up in this more challenging time. I learned a lot, as I always do when I catch up with Charlotte, in particular about how Significance shows up in times of uncertainty.

Charlotte is a seasoned Strengths Coach, and we explored how positioning others to shine drives her Significance and supports her other Strengths.
