Starting a pharmaceutical business doesn’t automatically mean manufacturing medicine yourself or investing in a production facility.
One potentially lower-capital route is to enter the supply chain as an importer or wholesaler.

But the biggest mistake is buying stock first and figuring out compliance later.

The way to keep startup costs down is to map the regulatory and commercial pathway before spending money on premises, inventory or supplier commitments.

At HCPA, we help businesses assess the opportunity, determine the correct regulatory pathway, establish the required quality and compliance systems, prepare applications and supporting documentation, respond to regulators and prepare for market entry.

Then, once operational, we can help identify product opportunities, customers, overseas suppliers and Australian distribution partnerships.

Start with the pathway. Spend once you know exactly what the business needs.

Thriving Kids is here and it could create a significant new space for organisations supporting children and families.

The Australian Government and states and territories are jointly investing $4 billion over five years into Thriving Kids, the first phase of Foundational Supports.
It will support children aged 8 and under with developmental delay and/or autism with low-to-moderate support needs, with services beginning to roll out from October 2026.

Supports are expected to include child development checks, family programs, allied health, capacity building, low-cost assistive technology and help connecting families with the right services.

So, can you start a Thriving Kids business?
There isn’t currently a simple “Thriving Kids provider registration” pathway like becoming an NDIS provider. Services will be delivered through state and territory systems, with commissioning and specific opportunities continuing to develop as the program rolls out.

Getting the structure right before opportunities open could put your organisation in a much stronger position.
HCPA helps businesses with exactly this.

Building a brand in a regulated market requires more than a logo, website and social presence.

Before investing heavily in your brand, there are a few foundations worth getting right first.

1. Understand your regulatory pathway.
Know which regulations apply to your business, what claims you can make, how you can market your services and where your compliance boundaries sit. Building first and fixing compliance later can become expensive.

2. Understand why customers are choosing you.
Look at what is already driving enquiries, conversions and retention. Your strongest brand positioning often comes from the reasons customers already trust or prefer your business.

3. Know how the market compares you.
If customers are considering you alongside similar providers, being compliant isn’t enough to differentiate you. Your brand should clearly communicate why someone should choose you.

4. Build consistency before you scale.
Growth puts more pressure on your processes, customer experience, messaging and reputation. The stronger those foundations are before you scale, the easier it is to maintain trust as the business grows.

HCPA works with businesses across regulated industries to navigate the requirements and build stronger foundations for growth.

In a regulated market, there’s a point where not having a strong brand can start holding back growth, therefore:

1. Your regulatory pathway is unlikely to change
You know which licences, approvals and requirements apply. If the structure of the business is still changing, your brand and positioning may need to change with it.
2. You know what customers actually choose you for
Look at your first customers. What made them choose you instead of a competitor? Build your positioning around a reason that has already proven valuable, rather than what you assume people want.
3. People are starting to compare you with competitors
In regulated industries, businesses can end up offering very similar services because they operate under the same rules. Brand becomes important when compliance alone is no longer enough to differentiate you.
4. Growth is about to make inconsistency expensive
Hiring salespeople, entering a new state, adding services, increasing ad spend or bringing on partners are all good triggers.
Get the brand clear before 20 people are explaining your business 20 different ways.
The best time to build your brand is when the business has enough evidence to know what it stands for, but before you start scaling it.
That means your positioning, messaging and reputation can scale with the business instead of needing to be rebuilt later.

This launch is about more than entering a new industry. It’s about helping build a better pathway between essential medicines and the people who need them.

HCPA is now supporting businesses entering pharmaceutical importing and wholesale, helping navigate the complex regulatory, compliance and supply-chain requirements involved in bringing medicines into Australia.

Because when more capable businesses can enter highly regulated pharmaceutical markets responsibly, there is greater potential for stronger supply, increased competition and, ultimately, more accessible and affordable options for Australians.

Better access. Stronger supply. More competition.

You probably interact with trade promotions more often than you realise.

McDonald’s Monopoly. Supermarket prize draws. Buy-to-win campaigns. Retail giveaways. Loyalty competitions.

They’re built into the way some of Australia’s biggest brands to attract customers, drive engagement and encourage repeat purchases.

But behind the promotion is a regulatory framework businesses need to navigate.
HCPA now supports Trade Promotions, from regulatory assessment and compliance through to applications and multi-state campaigns.

What looks like a simple giveaway can be a serious growth strategy when it’s structured correctly.

There’s more than one way to enter Australia’s medcan industry.

The main models are wholesale brands, telehealth clinics and cultivation and each requires a different setup.

From choosing the right model to establishing your operations, infrastructure and growth strategy, having the right foundations in place from day one can make the process significantly easier.

For cultivation businesses, specialist horticultural support can also help optimise grow cycles and operations.

Save this if you’re exploring the MedCan industry.
