As I reflect on my beautiful daughter turning 4 years old, I realise how much she teaches me every day. Lessons that apply on a personal level, but also a professional one.
Recently I’ve had to take stock professionally to make decisions for the future, and I couldn’t help but notice, as I was doing the birthday preparations, that her teachings are some of the most important ones I’ve ever learned.
Firstly, persistence.
My girl never gives up. It might take 3000 times of trying to master a task. It might take (and has taken) up to 3 years to master certain skills. But she never gives up. You only ever fail if you give up trying. Even when it doesn’t always happen in the timeframe you set for yourself. Eventually, through changing the way you approach it, or even being brave enough to ask for help, you’ll get there!!
Secondly, emotional intelligence.
Being tuned in and reading the room is vital! My girl sits back and watches everyone for a while before she engages with her chosen people. If you take a leaf out of her book, you’ll see that she engages with individuals that matches her character, her personality, and therefore her personal values ultimately. This saves a lot of time and energy wasted, and can help you build better quality, long term relationships. If you trust your instincts, you rarely regret it. Don’t let anyone make you doubt your gut. Believe me, it’s not worth it.
Thirdly, and for the sake of this long post, lastly, don’t compromise your own value.
When a situation arises that compromises or conflicts with our value, this can have a significant impact on our well-being, our self-esteem and self-belief. However it can be hard to recognise that this is happening, leaving us feeling confused by our emotions and often doubting ourselves. In my daughter’s world, feeling like she’s forced into something she doesn’t agree with causes complete overwhelm and disregulation which ultimately leads to conflict. Know your true value and stand your ground. Walking away and closing a door most certainly opens another. Believe that!
Thankyou for the lessons my sweet girl. Your value in this life is beyond measure, and I’ll walk through fire to ensure that you grow up believing that.
