This is a question I think more established business owners need to ask. Because when you started, you probably DID need to do everything.

You sold.
Delivered.
Fixed.
Chased.
Approved.
Remembered.

Held the whole bloody thing together. And it worked. It got you here. But sometimes the habits that helped you build the business become the very habits that stop you leading it.

You keep doing things because you've always done them.
You stay involved because you've always been involved.
You carry decisions because you've always been the person who knew the answer.

But your business has changed. Have you changed your role with it? You don't need to prove you can do everything anymore. You've already proved that.

Now the question is: What does this business need from you next?

Because true performance was never about doing more. It's about seeing more — and knowing where you make the biggest difference.

We tend to assume growth means more. But I'm increasingly interested in a different kind of growth.

More clarity.
More control.

Read that again.

Because there are plenty of businesses making good money... with an owner who is absolutely exhausted.

Clients are happy.
Staff are employed.
Revenue is coming in.
From the outside?

SUCCESS!

But behind the scenes, the owner is still the approval department, problem solver, escalation point, quality controller and keeper of all the information.

So they tell themselves:
"It's just a busy period."
"I just need to get more organised."
"Once we get through this next stage, it'll settle down."

But what if it doesn't? Growth doesn't automatically fix operational chaos. Sometimes it magnifies it.

You don't necessarily need to become better at keeping up. You may need to build a business that requires less keeping up with. Very different goal.

This is the conversation I want to have more of.

Not: “How do I get more done?”

But: “Why does my business still need so much of me?”

Because there comes a point where working harder isn't impressive anymore.

It's information. Information about your systems. Your team. Your priorities. Your decisions. And sometimes, about the role you've accidentally created for yourself.

I've spent a lot of time thinking about what happens when a business owner finally gets enough space to see all of that clearly. And it's led me somewhere rather exciting.

It's called ALTITUDE.

The client problem.
The staff question.
The overdue invoice.
The email.
The thing that should have been done yesterday.

So you deal with whichever one is shouting the loudest.
And tomorrow? You do it all again.

This is where I often ask a business owner to take The Step Back.
Not step away from the business. Step back far enough to see it differently. And that's where the useful work begins.
