Lean Into Leadership

Your people are looking to the organization’s leadership to provide stability, updates and vision for a future that is uncertain. Agile leaders rally their workforce behind a shared vision and pivot quickly as requests change. Here are 8 ways to bring out the best in your workforce:

🟢 Communicate frequently and authentically. Prioritize face to face and turn on webcams to bridge the remote divide.

🟢 Connection is more important than perfection. Don’t worry about messy hair, clothes or desk.

🟢 Open meeting with a brief pulse check. A “quick how is everyone” goes a long way.
Increase frequency of one on one meetings.

🟢 Understand an employee’s context.

🟢 Adjust your leadership style. Look what is most effective in prioritizing your team’s needs.

🟢 Over-indexing compassion and empathy. Goes a long way toward motivating and engaging people.

🟢 Find the right channel and frequency to connect with your people for you to remain authentic.

🟢 Once people transition back into workplace, maintain high levels of connectivity throughout duration of disruption.

Go the extra mile with your peers

Employee peer recognition deserves attention and is one of the essential building blocks in building company culture. PeoplePulse research reflected that organizations using strategic peer recognition programs are 48 percent more likely to report high staff engagement. Human beings love to receive praise for their efforts or moral support. Recognition from a fellow team member results in an increased level of pride and validation.

Microbonuses are small rewards given frequently by one colleague to another in gratitude of value contribution and have the most significant impact as action is rewarded in real time. Recognizing your peers can include the following:

🌐Writing a thank-you note in appreciation of a coworker's work.

🌐Writing a small post on LinkedIn.

🌐Tagging your colleague.

🌐Highlighting your peer's great work and support in a team meeting.

With these small but significant gestures, you can keep your employees happy and engaged — and that does great things for your business's bottom line.

Emotional Waste In The Workplace

Modern day leaders, it’s time to cut the complaining, stop drama filled stories and arguing with reality. Recouping problem saturated time into impactful, value adding and deliverable results.

No more of “my colleague is slacking off and l’m doing all the work, nobody tells me anything, I don’t have time for this training, too much work on or I don’t get paid to stay back”. Whining, gossiping, complaining are wasted energies that stain the fabric of the organisation.

When we invest time into eliminating emotional waste by facilitating resourceful thought processes, investing in curious questions centred around personal responsibility, people’s contributions increase as they engage in activity rather than drama.

Let’s keep it simple. When we subscribe to driving our own bus, then we are 100% responsible for our results. Our level of accountability determines our happiness, not the circumstances around us.

Leaders Are Imperfect

Every human is vulnerable to what Daniel Goleman calls the “amygdala hijack.” When your fear takes over, it can affect your ability to make sound decisions. Sometimes your choices are not the best ones, and at times you don’t understand the impact until hindsight kicks in, and by then it’s often too late to turn back.

You may not be able to control external events; however, you do have the responsibility of leading you and making choices to promote positive change that aligns with organizational values.

Change is here to stay. Understanding the importance of resourceful thinking will allow you to be at the forefront of leading change. At times, change can be disruptive and overwhelming, and with the right attitude, a focus on business readiness, leaders can capitalize on change by learning to embrace change for what it is – possibility.

Workplace Collaboration Binds People Together

Have you ever experienced firsthand the challenge in getting in a group of people to collaborate and how difficult it can be – like herding cats. The project moves ahead, ideas are nurtured only to be discarded, and work festers awaiting review. Initial approvals are granted then denied, and revisions are endlessly resulting in deadlines missed. Budgets are exceeded, and team members are confused. It’s one hot mess.

Collaboration in the workplace is not unique to part of the organization. It must be adopted by every member of staff irrespective of level or role. Visibility is the key, and when employees see their leaders effectively collaborating, an inspired workforce replicates this behavior and the ripples begin. Everyone has a voice that matters, and when possibilities are spoken and acted upon, successful business outcomes are endless.

Be the first domino

How often do you hear, “When is management going to get it right? They never listen.” The frontline manager must model the behaviour you wish to see in others. Rather than buying into the drama, diatribes, and emotional waste, adopt the role of rebuilder and healer to serve as the role model for others to follow.

Leaders can engage in asking quality questions to transform negative energy into self-reflection, leading to better self-awareness and positive change. For instance, asking, “What could you do right now to help or how could we make this work together?" is far more empowering and brings calmness to the workplace.

Emotions matter: Navigating Through Uncertain Times

There has never been a period where we have experienced this much uncertainty. Your emotional wellbeing is publicly put on display, exposing all your flaws and imperfections that you try so very hard to hide.

Here are 5 ways to nurture yourself and others:

🌀 Focus your energy on the present moment, where you have some power. Identify what you need specifically.

🌀 During a crisis, working on your emotional fitness will place you in the best position to bypass your ego and when you want to give up.

🌀 Hold space for people to grieve their experience, to listen to their concerns. Be empathetic and reach out without the expectation that they will respond. A text message knowing that you are there when they are ready to land on their feet and take the next step can make the difference.

🌀 Different people will require different types of support, so rather than assume what people need, start with where they are at.

🌀 Every human being is grieving something, even the loss of what you perceive to be “normal”. It is not unusual to feel alone during these times. Combat isolation by sharing what you are experiencing with people around you.

New article: Fostering a culture of wellbeing

Employee wellbeing is now front and center in just about every organization's strategic plan, and remote working has unveiled a greater understanding of how individuals desire a greater purpose that speaks to connection and support. As a result, the U.S. corporate wellbeing market is now estimated to be $20.4 billion and is projected to exceed $87.4 billion by 2026.

As the Great Resignation continues to accelerate, no less than 88% of employees Oracle surveyed said that the meaning of what "success" looks like has changed for them. Today, people are prioritizing work-life balance, mental health and purpose.

Cleary then, when organizations invest in people, they invest in their own success. Here are 8 ways to foster an environment of employee wellbeing:

📌establish wellness discussion with employees

📌 put mental health at the forefront

📌lead by example

📌level up manager with mental health training

📌embrace psychological safety

📌focus on the whole person

📌upskill employees

📌create a culture wellbeing

Creating a culture in which people can take the time they need to be happy and healthy creates additional positive ripples in both performance and profitability.

88% of employees report that the meaning of success has recently changed for them, with more and more considering a healthy work environment as vital as professional achievement: how to fuel both.

Conversations That Make You Feel Anxious, Sweaty Or Nauseous

Maybe you need to give someone feedback and you fear they will get defensive or maybe you need to talk to your boss about something they are doing that makes it hard for you to do your job well.

For conversations to work, here are some key steps to lead the courageous conversation in a resourceful way.

🌟 Identify your stories and challenge counterproductive ones by asking quality questions. Such as, ‘what am l telling myself about this person, is it fact or opinion?’

🌟 How you enter a conversation matters. If you go into a conversation angry, you are likely to trigger the same in the other person, thereby triggering a response that is unlikely to achieve an outcome you had hoped for. Ask yourself, ‘what response by me would be for the highest good of all involved?’

🌟 Be clear with your intention for having the conversation. Ask yourself, ‘what outcome would l like from this conversation and is it possible, reasonable and truly desirable’?

🌟 How you deliver the conversation can escalate or create break through moments. Ask yourself, ‘what is the most impactful, respectful and compassionate way to state my view and invite further dialogue’.

How Leaders Lead Emotions In A Crisis

No one can control how the future will unfold, how the post pandemic will play out, how government will manage, and you certainly can’t magically control your feelings eliminating all the fear and anxiety. What you can do, is control what you do today. How you chose to lead your behavior.

Our inner world is embroiled in an emotional storm, unhelpful thoughts spinning inside your head, demanding you to drop an anchor like ships at sea to hold the boat steady until the storm passes. Here are 4 ways to do so:

📌Be aware of what you are feeling at any given moment. Observe your emotions, name them as this will give you more distance from them.

📌Calm you. Use your breath to move stress hormone out of your bloodstream. Breathe through your nose as you count to three, hold three seconds, exhale through your nose to count of six and then hold another three.

📌Movement is crucial whether it be running up and down stairs or crawling like a crab from one end of the room to the other. By discharging stress, you will quieten the body and mind.

📌Self-reflect. Change the narrative, place the adult self in charge by acknowledging that these feelings won’t last forever and hold your vulnerable self with kindness and compassion.
