NHM translation

NHM translation Welcome to nhm translation for professional French-English interpreting, translation, copyediting, cultural and language advice. We need a greener economy.

I work to facilitate technology transfer and sustainable innovation by supporting environmental consultants and managers to access and communicate information in English. I translate environment related texts from French to English and provide copyediting support for French companies seeking to promote sustainability practices globally. I combine language with corporate communication and marketing experience to help businesses be visible internationally

In cookbook translation, the familiar freelance pattern of feast and famine feels particularly on theme (pun intended 😊).

So I'm very thankful that my hard work over the years has paid off with several cookbook translation projects landing on my desk for 2026... I'm very much my happy place.

Later this month, I’ll be sharing my experience in a webinar on 25 February:
Practical Insights into Book Translation and Working with Publishers

In this session, I’ll talk honestly about what I’ve learned working directly with Australian publishers on non-fiction and cookbooks:
• how book projects differ from agency and community work
• what publishers actually expect
• style guides, contracts and payment structures
• managing long projects with staggered delivery
• dealing with complex files, layouts and workflows
• and using AI thoughtfully as a professional tool (not a shortcut)

I don’t pretend to know everything, but I’m very happy to share what has worked for me and grateful to be doing work I genuinely enjoy.

If you’re curious about book translation, looking to diversify your practice, or wanting a clearer picture of what working with publishers really involves, I’d love to see you there.

For those of you I've worked with in 2025, thank you for your business.

2025 has brought many highlights including being involved in training up and coming translators and interpreters. I enjoyed teaching interpreting at Monash University and being involved in the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators Newstarter program.

One of the reasons I love being a translator is that I'm always learning new things (and, of course, playing with words!). This was definitely true while I was translating a 300-page book about healthy living which will be published next year. I'm excited about seeing it in print!

I look forward to working with you in the new year.

French Word of the Week šŸ‡«šŸ‡·

🌟 Magnifique (mahn-yee-FEEK) 🌟

Meaning: Magnificent or wonderful!

Use it to describe anything that impresses you, from a delicious meal to a stunning view.

šŸ“¢ Example: "Ce coucher de soleil est tout simplement magnifique!" (This sunset is simply magnificent!)

Thanks for having me Australia. It was a pleasure meeting your amazing artisans and seeing their work. I really enjoyed interpreting for them in Melbourne.

Enjoying some cooking and recipe testing on a rainy weekend.

šŸ”¹One of the perks of translating recipes is that you get to discover new dishes and ingredients šŸ”¹

Some ingredients may be difficult to source in another country and recipes need to be adapted with suitable substitutes, or even left out altogether.

This happened on my most recent book translation project. I had to test a recipe that called for ā€˜fromage blanc’ - a fresh cheese originating from the north of France and southern Belgium.

This kind of cheese is not readily available in Australia. Suggested substitutes are goat’s cheese, sour cream, ricotta or queso fresco. I tested it with both sour cream and fresh ricotta.

šŸ“ Can you guess which one was the most suitable substitute? The winner was ricotta!

A pleasure to delve into Korean culinary culture through translating this beautifully photographed book. Learn how to cook a traditional Korean BBQ and a variety of traditional, simple and tasty family recipes including several varieties of kimchi. Thanks to Murdoch Books once again for the opportunity to translate and I look forward to seeing the English version in print.

Congratulations to Jemma Ives for organising the first ever OzTerps conference interpreting practice group event at RMIT University in Melbourne, with over 10 participants and languages spanning Spanish, French, Japanese and Arabic. It was a pleasure to assist you in delivering speeches in French for the interpreters. Such a great initiative to enable deliberate practice and networking that has been missing for Australian interpreters. I hope this successful first edition will be the first of many!
