🚨 PRC’s CYBER SAFETY SUNDAY 🚨

Today we encourage every parent to sit down with their children and have the conversation about online safety.

Ask them:
• Who are they talking to online?
• What apps are they using?
• Has anyone made them feel uncomfortable online?
• Do they understand that photos shared online can spread far beyond your control?
• Do they know about fake profiles and how dangerous people use them to trick children?
• Do they know what Sextortion is and not to send nudes or sexual images of themselves to anyone?

Predators no longer need direct access to children. They often start with information, photos and social media profiles shared publicly online by parents, family or schools to name a few.

A simple conversation today could protect your child tomorrow.

At Project Rescue Children, we believe prevention starts with awareness, communication and education inside the home.

For families, sport is where children can learn teamwork, confidence and friendship 🏉🎾🏀🏏🎽

However, our new research shows that some young people, experience difficult online interactions with people connected to their sporting life.

Our latest research looks at cyberbullying and online hate experienced by children aged 10-17 from people connected to their organised sports.

These findings show that some children have been exposed to harmful behaviour online by peers, as well as adults, coaches, referees and others involved in sport. These experiences most often happened in direct messages. group chats calls or emails. They also happened on social media comments and posts, and sometimes on club-run digital platforms.

Sporting clubs, parents and carers can play an important role in helping children stay safe online by:
📋 setting clear expectations for mindful online behaviour
💬 talking regularly with children about their online sporting spaces
🧒 creating safe ways for children to speak up if something feels uncomfortable or hurtful and to report any issues
💻 check how teams or clubs are using group chats and social platforms
🤝 support positive and inclusive team cultures online and offline by modelling respectful communication.

Every child deserves to feel safe, supported and included both on the field and online.

Beyond belief

TW: the following post contains mention of child abuse.

A year-long covert investigation by Victoria Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team (JACET) began in late 2023 following intelligence shared by Queensland Police Service.

This led to the infiltration of an online group using an encrypted messaging application to share both abhorrent text and image-based material, and to source children for sexual abuse.

The online group was shut down and 26 Victorian-based alleged members were charged with more than 1000 offences, including the possession, access, transmission, solicitation, and production of child abuse material.

Group members shared collections of child abuse material and child sexual abuse fantasies in the mistaken belief the app’s encryption would shield them from detection. This included images and videos depicting the sexual abuse, torture and murder of infants and young children, as well as be******ty.

No newly generated material involving Australian children was identified during the investigation.

As a result of the efforts to identify members of the group, who were believed to be based across Australia and overseas, AFP and Victoria Police JACET investigators executed 31 search warrants across Victoria and seized 100 electronic devices.

About 65,000 unique child abuse images and videos were identified including more than 300 hours of child abuse videos - the equivalent of about 175 feature films.

Nineteen referrals were made to domestic and international law enforcement agencies, which resulted in the arrest of nine further alleged offenders by NSW Police Force.
