Another week, another update.

The good news is that exams have started up again.

Unfortunately, the rollout still appears to be facing significant challenges.

Here’s what we’re seeing at the moment:

In-person exams have recommenced at the BPC offices.

Communication continues to be a major issue, with many candidates receiving little or no information throughout the process.

Some candidates haven’t received the onboarding emails required before sitting their exam, resulting in the BPC having to reschedule exam bookings.

The at-home online exam is still not available.

Candidates who successfully sat the online exam over a month ago are still waiting for their results, despite being told they could expect an outcome within 2–3 weeks.

We understand that implementing a new licensing system is a significant undertaking, and challenges are inevitable.

What builders need most right now is clear communication and consistency. When people are left wondering whether they’ve missed an email, whether their exam is still going ahead, or when they’ll receive their results, it creates unnecessary stress in an already demanding process.

As always, we’ll continue sharing updates as we receive them.

If you’ve recently sat an exam or received a booking, we’d love to hear how your experience has been.

🚨Licensing Update

Following on from our post last week, we wanted to share the latest information we’ve received.

The BPC has recommenced exam bookings.

Here’s what we know so far:

• Candidates began receiving booking notifications yesterday.
• The exams appear to be in person.
• The venue has changed again and is now the BPC offices.
• The earliest booking we’ve seen from our clients is 4 August.

At this stage, that’s the information we have.

As always, we’ll keep sharing updates as we receive them so builders have the clearest picture possible of what’s happening.

If you’ve recently received an exam booking, we’d love to know:

* What date were you given?
* Have you received any additional information about the format or what to expect?

The more we can piece together what’s happening across the industry, the better we can support everyone working towards their licence.

It’s been a little quiet around here.

That wasn’t by accident.

Over the past month we’ve been spending less time posting and more time helping builders navigate what has become one of the most challenging licensing rollouts we’ve seen.

Rather than speculate, we’ve waited until we had a clearer picture of what was happening.

This isn’t about pointing fingers.

It’s about sharing what we’re seeing, what our clients are experiencing, and why so many builders are feeling frustrated by the current process.

If you’re currently working towards your licence, we’d encourage you to take a few minutes to read through the slides.

And if your experience has been different - good or bad - we’d genuinely love to hear from you in the comments.

The more openly we can share what’s happening across the industry, the better informed everyone will be.

The BPC has confirmed that Domestic Building Insurance (DBI) will be replaced by Home Warranty Insurance from 1 July 2026.

For most builders currently holding DBI eligibility, the transition will be automatic.

There are, however, some important changes around insurance thresholds, premiums, coverage and the powers available to the BPC.

We’ve summarised the main points above.

Have questions? Drop them below and we’ll answer what we can.

Thanks to CCM Insurance Group for their summary of the announced changes.

🚨 Builder Registration Exams Suspended 🚨

We’re only two days into the current exam rollout.

On day one, applicants reported technical difficulties, confusion around instructions and delays before exams could even get underway.

Today, exams have been suspended for maintenance.

Look, nobody likes delays.

But if there are problems with the exam platform, content or delivery, we’d rather see them fixed now than have applicants paying the price later.

The builder registration process should be challenging.

The exam experience shouldn’t be confusing.

We’ll keep our clients updated as more information becomes available.

A lot of people assume this process is just paperwork.

It’s not.

Most of the time, it’s helping people understand:

* what matters
* what doesn’t
* what’s changed
* and how to actually present their experience clearly

That’s usually where the stress sits.

A change that actually helps.

The Federal Budget has just confirmed that all mandatory Australian Standards will now be free to access.

For an industry that’s been required to follow these documents… but also pay for them… this is a big shift.

It removes a long-standing barrier and makes it easier for builders and applicants to:

* understand requirements
* study properly
* stay compliant

We’re all for it.

It won’t change how we guide our clients (we’ve always worked from the Standards), but it does make the process more accessible for everyone coming through.

And that’s a good thing.

08/05/2026

The exam has shifted.

It’s no longer just about knowing where to find things in the standards.

We’re seeing more practical, scenario-based questions come through.

Which changes things.

Because now it’s not just about recognising information -
it’s about understanding how to apply it.

And that’s where people are getting caught out.

The pass mark has shifted.

It used to sit around 70%.

We’re now seeing it closer to 80%.

That’s a big jump.

Not because the process is trying to catch people out -
but because the expectation is higher.

And when you combine that with everything else that’s changing…

…it’s not something you just “wing” anymore.

Give us a call.

There’s a big assumption that once you pass the exam, you’re through.

That’s not how it’s playing out.

We’ve seen a recent case where the exam was passed…
and then a detailed request came through for more information on experience.

Not a quick check.
A proper deep dive.

This part is tightening.

So now it’s not just about getting through the exam -
it’s about how clearly your experience stacks up on paper.

If that’s not clear, it can stop you.

Passing can get you through one door. It doesn’t guarantee what’s on the other side…
