Menswear is inherently more sustainable.

I’ve designed both Men’s and Women’s wear apparel for businesses up to $80mill aud and when I compare the two, Menswear, almost without realising it, is inherently more sustainable and uses circular design principles.

Listed above are some of the comparisons I have made between the two markets and some reasons driving it.

If you want to make your product more sustainable, I would love to help, send me an email [email protected] for a free 30min chat

I’ve experienced this a number of times in my career, notably in the 2008 GFC and the 2020 pandemic…and in a couple of years time I predict I’ll be talking about the 2024 cost of living crisis.

So what happens? The economy tanks and businesses put a freeze on all “risky” product in favour of trading off best sellers or “safe” core product. Which in itself, isn’t wrong, the mistake comes in not continuing to innovate and develop the product behind the scenes.

What happens next? the economy picks up, customer confidence returns and design teams are scrambling trying to figure out what the customer wants whilst potentially managing a lot of sameness in existing product that the customer doesn’t want.

So make sure you keep innovation happening and if you do need to pause don’t leave it too long before you refocus and if you aren’t sure on what to focus on, I can help with that, send me an email [email protected] for a free 30min chat

“Peruvian culture is literally steeped in alpaca farming. Alpacas have been domesticated for over 5,000 years and all the local farmers I've come across love their alpacas. Their livelihood is tied to them and they understand if they treat their alpacas well, their life can also improve. The alpaca industry has a major impact on communities. Boycotting alpaca fibre because of how one farm may treat their alpacas would have really dire consequences to so many people's livelihoods, especially the indigenous population in Peru.”

In this episode, Belinda chats with lovely Sophia Vatousios, founder of the lifestyle brand La Sierra. We discuss her unconventional path into fashion, her love of Alpaca fibre and unwavering commitment to create impact in those indigenous communities by preserving ancestral knowledge.

Sophia's entrepreneurial lessons over eight years are not only inspiring but also a testament to her dedication to creating a positive impact within the communities she works with.

Discover how a serendipitous encounter with Alpaca fibre completely change the course of her life, her first hand experience of working directly with Alpaca farmers and how a strategic relocation to Spain is reinvigorating her vision for the brand.

Her grounded approach, centred in integrity and advocating for indigenous communities, is something we need more of in the fashion industry. Thanks so much for your time I loved chatting with you!

The truth is you don’t have to go to fashion school to be have a successful brand, but you do have to have the right people around you who can show guide you and help you learn “what you don’t know”. These knowledge gaps can hold you back and/or cause costly and time-sucking mistakes.

Many of the people I work with describe themselves as “Accidental” designers. People who almost fell into designing because they say a gap in the market and just went for it.

If you have been sitting on this dream of launching a brand but don’t have time to go to fashion school my 6 and 9 week 1:1 coaching is built for you. It gives you a strong foundation of the need to knows to avoid costly mistakes outsiders make. Down the track this foundation allows you to scale without amplifying any problems that have been unknowingly built in. DM me or send an email to [email protected] to have a free chat.

It's messages like these that remind me of so many great brands I have worked with this year! Wondering if a creative will understand your aesthetic is often the most stressful part of working with a designer, but my process reduces the risk and i'm able to understand the look you are after with your product. Get in touch if you need an experienced designer to bring those ideas to life!
P.S I will be closing from the 20th of December until the 9th of Jan.

Have you ever stopped to think about the true cost of the clothes you buy? The fast fashion industry has made it possible for us to buy clothes at very cheap prices, but someone, somewhere always pays the price. What if we started asking more about the environmental and social impact of these clothes?

So, instead of thinking that ethical and sustainable clothes are too expensive, we should start asking ourselves why clothes are so cheap. It's time to start thinking about the true cost of our clothes and the impact they have on the environment and people.

"For them, they really appreciate that I'm bringing jobs to them and paying them to do something that is easy. It doesn't come at the cost of their health or losing their own culture. It's not like they have to become migrant workers in some coastal factory and leave their kids behind. Here they can take care of their kids. They're in charge of their own hours and they know how to make an indigo dye vat because their mothers did that and their grandmothers did that. I don't have to teach them anything. They are more the ones that are teaching me. I just have to send them the order."

In today’s episode I chat to the delightful Angel Chang, zero carbon womenswear designer, founder and director of .official

Angel is a visionary fashion designer and deeply committed to ethical production practices. By collaborating with artisans to support traditional craftsmanship, she is empowering local communities and protecting the ancestral knowledge of how to live sustainably with the earth.

Her commitment to creating environmentally conscious and socially responsible designs has positioned her as a trailblazer in the industry, however, her path to where she is now wasn’t without some challenges.

Listen in to hear how Angel had to unlearn nearly everything she had previously learnt in fashion to fall back into step with nature and the Indigenous community she is working with.

As the fashion world continues to grapple with its impact on the planet, she serves as a beacon of hope, offering innovative solutions and inspiring others to join the movement towards a more sustainable future.

Thanks so much for your time it was an absolute joy to chat with you!

"The long-term vision was always there because you can't approach these things with a short-term vision. After all, if you're not thinking about the garment in 50 years, it doesn't lend itself to circularity."

In today’s episode, I talk to Courtney Holm, founder, and director of the Circular Fashion Label .world.

Along with challenging the traditional fashion business model and the definition of sustainability, Courtney has also managed to build a values-driven business. Her unwavering commitment to making sure her professional work aligns with her values has resulted in one of the best examples of a circular fashion label.
It's inspiring to see such an intelligent and thought-out fashion label carving out its own path and bringing to life its unique business model.

Listen in to hear Courtney explain how her design process is the complete opposite of the common process most fashion businesses use, what her utopian world of fashion would look like, how she approaches shopping when she needs something her label doesn't produce and much more.

Thanks so much for your time I'm excited to see what's next for .world!
