Kissing Spines is a condition I come across regularly in clinical practice. It should be considered in patients with severe back pain, bucking/rearing, resistance to being saddled etc.
X-rays, diagnostic ultrasound & nuclear scintigraphy are the main tools of evaluation.
These pictures show kissing spines where adjacent parts of the spine impinge on each other causing pain, inflammation & possible irritation of spinal nerves.
Therapies include:
Local steroid injections
Shockwave
Chiropractic treatment & soft tissue massage
Properly fitting tack
Acupuncture
Surgery in extreme cases
I have successfully managed numerous cases of kissing spines with a combination of spinal manipulation & mobilisations, deep tissue massage & stretching. Educating riders on how to minimise painful exacerbations is paramount to successful management of the condition & encouraging horses to work correctly over their toplines is of utmost importance in keeping them comfortable & performing at their best.
