MIA renews call to prioritise skilled offshore workers and partners of Australians

The Migration Institute of Australia is calling on the Government to reverse the deprioritisation of highly skilled offshore workers and offshore partners of Australians under Ministerial Directions 117 and 119.

MIA CEO Peter van Vliet says the changes are creating significant uncertainty for Australian businesses and families.

This is why it pays to belong to the MIA. Advocating for improved visa processing, strengthened regional migration and the importance of skilled migration, including offshore skilled migration to Australia’s prosperity.

MIA President Sean Choong MMIA, CEO Peter van Vliet, and General Manager Policy and Advocacy Bronwyn Markey FMIA, appeared at the Joint Standing Committee on Migration inquiry into skilled migration in Melbourne this morning.

The MIA advocated on behalf of our members for improved visa processing times, strengthened regional migration and the importance of skilled migration, including offshore skilled migration to Australia’s prosperity.

I knew Peter Van Vliet was interviewed yesterday, and after listening to his comments - I just wanted to say I wrote my post before I heard the interview. Just so happens great minds think alike.
Sort out all those on bridging visa’s who are buying time.
Leave students alone they contribute to the economy.
Skilled workers should not just be prioritised to onshore as this doesn’t solve the problem and neither should family visas.

Great to be on Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Weekend Breakfast show this weekend and also ABC radio earlier in the week to talk about: ☑️the fact that net overseas migration is returning to normal levels - well done ☑️the importance of international education to our economy and s...

How much crap is on social media about migration.🙈How many businesses do you know that are struggling to find skilled workers? Why do WA have a subsidy encouraging the sponsoring of overseas trades, if we don’t need them. If the government are prioritising workers who are already here and working in their trade how does this help anyone. Watch everyone jump on a flight to lodge onshore, then can’t work for 3 months or more whilst waiting for a bridging visa. How will this affect the housing crisis? I agree let’s not turn out like the UK. Put a stop to people coming onshore, applying for a visa they are not eligible for and then applying to tribunal and in some cases buying themselves 5 or 6 years maybe more onshore. THIS is what needs to stop, not bringing in qualified trades who can work.
Students pay fortunes to study in Australia and if they are then skilled why shouldn’t they be eligible to apply for a skilled visa. They will have contributed more than some of those ‘living on a Centrelink budget’, during their time here. Who will drive your Ubers and deliver your uber eats which is what they do to earn whilst studying. Don’t see many aussies doing those jobs.
It’s not rocket science people. We just need people making decisions that understand the problems that need solving and not that are trying to buy votes to please the Australian public.
Whether Australia like it or not, we need skilled workers. Australia learn from the UK and don’t go down the same path.
