Midway Point-Sorell Fire Brigade

Midway Point-Sorell Fire Brigade Volunteer emergency response in Midway Point, Penna, Sorell and abroad - proudly since 1967.

Founded in 1967, the Midway Point-Sorell Volunteer Fire Brigade is a retained brigade of the Tasmania Fire Service, supporting the communities of Midway Point, Penna, Sorell, as well as a support response to our neighbouring communities of Cambridge, Dodges Ferry, Orielton, Wattle Hill, and further abroad as needed. Our brigade is crewed completely by volunteers of all ages and genders, providing

around-the-clock fire protection for the area and is active in firefighting and supporting the local community. In addition to residential and light industrial properties, the area includes facilities such as primary and secondary schools; trade training facility; nursing home; industrial processing and manufacturing plants; two shopping complexes; and is fringed on all sides with rural properties. Our brigade responds to a variety of incidents including, but not restricted to: automatic fire alarms; motor vehicle crashes; HAZMAT; and structure fires; as well as vegetation fires, not only in the local area, but other districts and regions throughout Tasmania and Australia. The brigade also provides assistance to other emergency services and the community as required. Our brigade is always on the lookout for new members that live in-area; if you’re interested feel free to message the page for further information. During National Volunteer Week, we’re proud to recognise not only the volunteers within Midway Point-Sorell Fire Brigade, but volunteers across all Tasmania Fire Service brigades and throughout our wider community.

Thank you to everyone who gives their time, skills and energy to support and care for others 🚒

During National Volunteer Week we’re saying thank you to all our Tasmania Fire Service volunteers who support our brigades and their communities.

It's been a big year for Bicheno Brigade who have gone through major changes - from minimal numbers which was challenging, to their membership rising significantly in recent months.

Brigade members come from a wide range of backgrounds, but they share a love of the local area, and a willingness to help others.

They are a group who come together, with positive energy, keen to improve and learn new skills, while creating a social community.

The core members continue to lead by example, with a strong level of dedication and commitment. Despite a period of low participation, the brigade was able to contribute to the initial response to the Dolphin Sands fire last year which was a significant achievement and learning experience.

From assisting police with road crashes, to bushfire responses, and continual training - the dedicated volunteers provide assistance to residents and visitors across the small Bicheno community.

With eight new recruits currently working their way through training, it could be an ideal time for more new recruits to sign up to the Brigade.

Today is Saint Florian’s Day, also recognised around the world as International Firefighters’ Day.

We acknowledge and thank all firefighters past and present for their courage, dedication and unwavering commitment to protecting our communities.

🤍 We also take a moment to honour and remember those who have lost their lives in service, and the sacrifices made in answering the call.

This year, we pause to remember Neil Brooksbank, a highly respected member of the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) whose dedication, leadership and contribution to the fire service community will not be forgotten. His service and legacy continue to be felt across the TFS and the communities he helped protect.

❤️ If you’re travelling across the Tasman Bridge tonight, you’ll notice it illuminated red in recognition of this important day.

Today, we honour the courage, sacrifice, and enduring spirit of the ANZACs. Those who served, those who continue to serve, and those who never returned.

Among them are members of Midway Point-Sorell Fire Brigade and the wider Tasmania Fire Service community, past and present, whose service to country and community reflects the very best of the ANZAC legacy.

… At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We will remember them.

Lest We Forget.

This Easter long weekend marks the end of the first quarter of 2026.

Midway Point-Sorell Fire Brigade members have completed a combined 271 hours of training and professional development, ensuring we’re ready when it matters most.

From January through March, we responded to:

🔥 6 vegetation fires
🚨 8 fire alarms
🔥 4 miscellaneous incidents
🚗 5 motor vehicle accidents
🚙 2 mobile property fires
🏠 3 structure fires
🚑 3 ambulance assists

The stinkiest of call-outs? A composting toilet that had generated a little too much heat 💨

Every callout is backed by ongoing preparation and the quiet support of families, employers, and our wider community all playing a part in what we do.

If you see us out and about, don’t be shy!.. give us a wave 👋
