SOURCING DIARIES: INDIA 🇮🇳 DAY ONE

We landed in Delhi at 5am and apparently decided sleep was optional 😂

Quick shower, straight into the cars and Day One was underway.

And what a first day.

Seeing Trine’s fabric actually being produced, checking her Drop One production and reviewing Drop Two samples.

Watching Sandra see her samples in person for the first time and having them already incredibly close to right. Our team and the factory are now making the final changes so production ready samples will be waiting for her when we arrive in Jaipur.

Watching Kate walk through two factories and realise just how enormous the capabilities here actually are.

And one of my favourite little moments, arriving at Trine’s factory to discover they had set up a cot especially for baby Willa. 🥹

This is the part of sourcing I wish more product founders could see.

There is such a difference between emailing a factory from home and actually being here. Walking the floor. Touching the product. Meeting the people making it. Seeing what they can do. Fixing things in real time.

And having our incredible Source Haus India team beside us through all of it.

All of that was Day One.

We were absolutely exhausted by the end of it, but bloody hell it was a good start.

Day Two coming next 🇮🇳

I don’t think entrepreneur FOMO is really about wanting what someone else has.

It’s that little voice saying:

“If I don’t keep up, I’m going to get left behind.”

And suddenly someone else’s new tool, strategy, launch or success feels like something you should be doing too.

I’m trying to get much better at remembering:

I don’t need to keep up with everyone. I need to know where I’m going.

Please tell me I’m not the only one whose brain does this? 😂

Jane does not do sales. She properly hates them.

So when she runs one, it means something.

Jane and I have worked together for over two years. Millwoods is small batch leather footwear, made from a farm outside Coolamon. She started it because she could not find good shoes for her own kids.

At the end of 2024 she walked away from 51 stockists and went direct. Everyone told her that was backwards. Her customers followed her anyway.

She is not trying to build a big business. She is building a better one.

One sale a year. It is on now and it ends Tuesday the 25th.

Go and have a look 💛

Everyone tells you to scale.

More revenue. More staff. More products. More locations.

But after building the big business, I’m questioning whether BIG should actually be the goal.

Take two hypothetical businesses:

Business 1
$10m revenue
5% net margin
$500k profit
25 staff
Warehouses, offices, stores and a whole lot of moving parts.

Business 2
$1m revenue
30% net margin
$300k profit
No staff initially
Global fulfilment
Smart systems + AI
Low fixed overheads
Freedom to work from pretty much anywhere.

That’s $9 million less revenue, but only $200k less profit.

Now, obviously these are illustrative numbers. Every business is different.

But that’s exactly my point.

We’ve become obsessed with the number at the top instead of asking what we’re actually left with at the bottom and what it took to get there.

I’ve built bigger.

This time around, I’m deliberately trying to build better.

Smaller. Leaner. Highly profitable. Less dependent on me.

And I genuinely think we’re going to see a lot more businesses built this way.

So I’m curious…

Which would you rather own?

$10m revenue + $500k profit?

OR

$1m revenue + $300k profit and a whole lot less complexity?

Pick your side 👇

The cheapest quote doesn’t always mean the cheapest outcome.

A great factory relationship can save you money, time, mistakes and a whole lot of headaches.

After 16 years in manufacturing, I’ll choose the right partner over the lowest price every time.

Follow for the manufacturing lessons I wish more product founders knew.
