🚨 Flood Watch – Pioneer River (Mackay region)
🚨 Issued by BOM: 12:10 pm AEST, Thursday 8 January 2026

A Flood Watch is now in place for the Pioneer River, with minor to major flooding possible over the coming days. A strengthening tropical low in the Coral Sea is expected to bring heavy, persistent rainfall and river levels may rise quickly once the system moves closer to the coast.

🌧️ What to Expect
• Heavy rainfall may cause river rises across the Pioneer River catchment
• Local creeks and drains may also respond quickly
• Conditions may change fast depending on the movement of the tropical low

⚠️ Safety Advice
• Never drive, walk or ride through floodwater
• Stay clear of rivers, creeks and stormwater drains
• Follow road closure signs and plan travel early
• Keep monitoring official updates

⚠️Make sure you check out our Emergency Dashboard at disaster.mackay.qld.gov.au and, if you haven’t already, opt-in to receive notifications.
You’ll find all the vital information on how to prepare your household, road closures, emergency updates and access to our Emergency Action Guide.

What is a Flood Watch?
The Bureau issues a Flood Watch to provide early advice of a developing situation that may lead to flooding. A Flood Watch is not a warning of imminent flooding.
A Flood Watch provides information about a developing weather situation including forecast rainfall totals, catchments at risk of flooding, and indicative severity where required.

Pull up a chair and let’s have a chin-wag about what you can do to assist firefighters who respond to bushfires on your rural property.

💧 Do you have a 50mm camlock fitting on your water tank?
💧 Are your external open water supplies, such as dams, pools, bores or tanks, accessible?
🔑 Is there unrestricted gate access (3m is preferable), as well as an alternate way out?
🔑 Is there space to reverse, turn or pass?
🔑 Is your property clear of overhanging vegetation and overhead powerlines?
⚠️ Are weight limits for bridges and cattle grids clearly signed? (Our RFS trucks weigh up to 10 tonnes)
⚠️ Are there clear signs indicating where water is and how to access it?
⚠️ Is your farm-based firefighting equipment serviceable?
👀 Is your location, such as your street address or lot number, visible?
👀 Is your contact information visible if we need to get in touch?

Help us, help you.

Cyclone 🌀

Prepare prior to the cyclone season can minimise damage to your property and save you time in an emergency.

Be prepared

Trim branches well clear of your home.
Fit window shutters or at least metal screens.
Clear your property of loose material that could blow about, causing injury or damage during extreme winds.
Have an emergency kit on hand, including battery operated radio, torch and spare batteries.
Keep a list of emergency contact numbers handy.
Be informed

Ask neighbours, the State Emergency Service or council representatives whether cyclones have occurred in your area, what to expect and appropriate actions to take.
Be alert

Keep up-to-date with the progress of a cyclone through information provided by the Bureau of Meteorology.
Decide as early as possible whether you are going to evacuate (evacuation may be necessary based on predicted wind speeds and storm surge heights).
Listen for official advice, which will be given on the local radio, internet and television regarding routes and when to move.
Follow the advice of local authorities in regards to appropriate actions during each stage of the cyclone.

For life threatening emergencies, call Triple Zero (000).
