“Millions of tonnes of biomass per year goes up in smoke adding to global climate change!”

In Western Australia approximately 10 million tonnes per year of straw is retained on the farm, and with no tillage systems, most is burnt. This is half the amount of biomass that countries such as Sweden and Finland use to make their forest industry products such as paper and pulp. Cass Materials can convert this agricultural waste into new fossil-FREE oil absorbing materials for the oil, gas and shipping industries. The foams are light weight and hydrophobic (float on water) for marine oil spills with quick absorption.

Cass Materials oil absorbing materials are 100% plant-based foams that absorb oils, lipids and other non-polar substances. The foams are light weight and hydrophobic (float on water) for marine oil spills with quick absorption.

Cass Materials’ 100% biobased foams for sustainable packaging are now hydrophobic, making them excellent for fresh food handling. Also, with the phasing out of fossil-based foams, Cass’ waterproof foams can even be used as an alternative for surfboards.

Cass Materials, with its innovative bio-based foams for sustainable packaging, is part of BioInnovation's "fast track" Hypothesis testing step 1. The project will show that Cass’ foams, using the cellulose fibre reject from the Domsjö Fabriker AB pulp mill, are a sustainable alternative to fossil-based packaging materials. Cass’ foams can be made into any shape or size for the protection and cushioning of fragile goods.

Sustainability in Construction Management: Fashioning Materials
B418 Exhibition Space - Curtin University Bentley Campus
From now until 13 October

Cass Materials AB based in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden is super pleased to be collaborating with Fibre Economy on this exciting new project to convert mining waste textiles into insulation foams, allowing the mining industry to close the loop and join the circular economy.

This project is an innovative exploration of a space where construction management and fashion disciplines meet. The exhibition will showcase an interdisciplinary examination of material sustainability, a place where these disparate disciplines meet. It will explore and feature innovation in the development of new materials applied in both the built environment / construction and fashion industries that support circular economy practices designed to reduce, recycle and reuse (3Rs) waste.

We would like to thank industry partners and sponsors: DLG SHAPE, ADCO Constructions, Australian Institute of Building, Aurecon, Built., Cass Materials, The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Clough, Fibre Economy, Georgiou, Lendlease, Multiplex, Programmed, Rider Levett Bucknall, Turner & Townsend, WRIGHT Systems

Cass Materials continues to improve its new Löven foams for sustainable packaging. Through the IoWA project, teaming up with UK artist Anna Dumitriu and Italian winery Marco Felluga Russiz Superiore, the Löven foams are made into wine bottle packaging using the waste streams of the Swedish forest industry. Stayed tuned for more exciting developments, exploring how to use vineyard waste.
