If solar or a battery has been on your mind, now might be a good time to start the conversation.

From 1 January 2027, the federal incentive for eligible rooftop solar will reduce, with the period used to calculate the number of Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) a system can receive moving from five years to four.

In simple terms, an equivalent solar system installed in 2027 will generally receive around 20% fewer STCs than one installed in 2026.

The incentive for eligible home batteries will reduce too, from 1 January 2027, before reducing again from 1 July.

While you shouldn't rush into a decision, there are only a few months left in 2026, and getting a solar or battery system designed, approved and installed takes time.

Starting the process now gives you more time to understand your options, choose the right equipment and, if you decide to go ahead, work towards a 2026 installation and make the most of the current STC incentive.

💡 Thinking about upgrading your home to solar or a battery, but worried about the upfront cost?

The NSW Government's Home Energy Saver program is now offering eligible homeowners and landlords access to zero-interest loans of up to $15,000 for a range of energy-saving upgrades. These include:

☀️ Rooftop solar
🔋 Home batteries
⚡ EV chargers
💧 Heat pump hot water systems
❄️ Reverse cycle air conditioning
🏡 Insulation, switchboard upgrades and more.

If your combined household income is up to $210,000, you could be eligible for a zero-interest loan, with repayments spread over up to 10 years. Eligible households may also be able to access a discount of up to $4,000.

If you're in NSW and you've been putting off upgrading your home because of the upfront investment, this could make it much more achievable.
