According to the Australian Glass & Window Association (AGWA), airtight windows and doors play a critical role in improving energy efficiency and indoor comfort. Miglas AliClad frames are engineered to achieve exceptional airtightness, helping reduce unwanted air leakage and maintain a more stable indoor temperature year-round. The result is greater comfort, lower energy consumption and a home that performs more efficiently in every season.

Perched high on an escarpment in the Blue Mountains, the Leura Rammed Earth House is a striking example of building in harmony with both landscape and climate. The material choice of a rammed earth structure not only complements the rugged surroundings but also delivers exceptional thermal performance and bushfire resilience.

Designed by Jamie Brennan of Six B Design, the home responds intelligently to its unique site. With sweeping southerly views and exposure to extreme winds, the project carefully balances outlook, protection and sustainability. Thick rammed earth walls form the core of the build, supported by insulated framing and durable external materials, creating a home that is both energy-efficient and robust in bushfire conditions.

Strategic design plays a key role — from carefully positioned windows that capture northern light while maintaining privacy, to natural ventilation pathways that draw air through the home. Miglas high-performance double-glazed windows feature throughout, contributing comfort and efficiency. Selected for their compliance with BAL-40 requirements and extreme wind load ratings, the internal timber frames beautifully complement the natural material palette, whilst the aluminium frames provide the protection and longevity required for the demanding environment.

Beyond the structure itself, thoughtful landscape design and features such as an underground water tank and multipurpose lap pool further enhance the home’s bushfire readiness. The result is a considered, high-performing residence that demonstrates how sustainability, resilience and architectural intent can work seamlessly together, even in the most challenging environments.

A well-designed home doesn’t fight the elements, it works with them. By harnessing the power of natural light, airflow and thermal mass, homes can stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer, reducing reliance on artificial heating and cooling. Miglas high-performance windows and doors are designed to support these principles, helping you maximise comfort, efficiency and sustainability. Following the bushfires that destroyed his home in 2020, Donald selected Miglas Windows for his rebuild in Buchan. Our team delivered a custom-designed glazing solution capable of meeting BAL 40 requirements, delivering both compliance and high-performance outcomes. This project was also featured by the ABC, showcasing the whole story, from the initial bushfire to the rebuilding of Donald's home.

"The choice of windows manufacturer for our build was the simplest decision of the many we needed to make.
As the site was deemed a “Complex Site” from a Bushfire Hazard perspective (because the steepness of the site and the surrounding landscape), we were required to build to BAL40.
For overall resilience, the construction was precast concrete panels. However, we didn’t want the building to feel like the inside of a Bunnings warehouse with concrete walls and aluminium doors and windows. We wanted to soften the feel of the interior by using timber in the fit out, as much as possible, which included in this case, the windows. Given that Miglas windows had an outer profile of aluminium for fire resistance and low maintenance, and were tested to BAL40, they were the natural fit. On top of this, the maximum BAL40 tested glass element size was 6m2, which allowed us to make the most of the spectacular views over the Snowy and the Buchan Rivers."
- Donald Graham

During the Black Summer bushfires, the Grahams watched their house burn from a peephole in a fire bunker. When they decided to rebuild, they created the most fire-resilient home possible. Here's how they did it.

Set against the tranquil backdrop of Central Victoria, this remarkable Muckleford homestead redefines what sustainable living can look and feel like. Designed as a high-performance Passive House, “The Open Field House” blends architectural precision with a deep respect for nature. Hempcrete walls provide exceptional insulation, breathability and acoustic comfort, while a carefully considered layout supports multi-generational and co-living lifestyles, proving that sustainability and shared living can coexist beautifully.

Positioned to capture northern light and panoramic views, every space is connected to the surrounding landscape. Expansive glazing plays a pivotal role here, framing grasslands, red gums and ever-changing skies, while maintaining outstanding thermal performance thanks to airtight construction and high-spec materials.

Featuring BAL-40-rated double-glazed Miglas windows, the home achieves a rare balance: interiors flooded with natural light, year-round thermal comfort, and meeting rigorous bushfire and energy standards.

The result is a home that feels calm, healthy and effortlessly liveable. With an energy profile that places it in the top 0.2% of homes nationwide, the property uses approximately 15% of the energy of a conventional home, providing a blueprint for the future of residential design, and showcasing how Miglas windows elevate both performance and architectural intent.
