Now that picking has officially finished for us, we spent a day last week completling one of the most special practices of the biodynamic process. Horn burying in biodynamics is a foundational practice used to create “Preparation 500”, where cow horns are filled with fresh manure from our beautiful Highland Cows, and buried over winter to transform into a nutrient-rich humus activator.
Buried for roughly six months, we then dig the horns up in the Spring and mix their powdered contents with water before spraying it over the vineyard to boost soil health, encourage microbial activity, and support root development.
