The South Australian Government has committed $15 million over 10 years for a new Forestry Centre of Excellence in Mount Gambier.

This incorporates the National Institute for Forest Products Innovation (NIFPI) and other forestry funding streams.

What a milestone for the Forestry Centre of Excellence!

Our recent showcase celebrated the first 18 months of the Centre's operation, highlighting the growing research capability, industry partnerships and innovation driving the future of forestry in the Green Triangle region.

A key highlight was the official opening of the completed Forestry Centre of Excellence facility by South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas, recognising the Centre's important role in supporting a productive, sustainable and resilient forestry sector.

The day featured presentations and technical sessions covering grower innovation, timber processing, forest health and emerging technologies, alongside research into remote sensing, silviculture, water use, biochar and climate-ready breeding programs.

Most importantly, the Showcase demonstrated the power of collaboration, bringing together industry, researchers, students and community partners to tackle real-world challenges and shape the future of forestry.

Thank you to everyone who attended, presented and contributed to making the event a success. We look forward to building on this momentum as we continue delivering research, partnerships and practical outcomes for the forestry sector.

From plantation establishment to emerging technologies, we recently brought together industry, researchers and stakeholders for a hands-on field trip in Mount Gambier.

Participants explored silvicultural practices in the field, gaining practical insights into plantation management and the collaborative work being undertaken through the Centre and its partners.

The afternoon showcased innovative tools and technologies shaping the future of forestry, including virtual reality applications, remote sensing, forest health monitoring, hydrology research and advanced tree assessment methods.

The day concluded with a networking dinner, providing an opportunity to strengthen connections and share knowledge across the forestry and research sectors.

A big thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to a valuable day of learning, collaboration and innovation.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in the Green Triangle for our inaugural Annual Showcase.

Across two days, we saw strong engagement from industry, researchers and partners — from field demonstrations of silvicultural practices to hands on technology showcases and valuable discussions at the Industry Research Showcase.

FCoE joined Green Triangle Forest Industries Hub at Lucindale Southeast Field Days 🌾🌲

The Centre recently joined with the Green Triangle Forest Industries Hub to display at the Southeast Field Days in Lucindale, sharing a tent with SFM.

The event brings over 500 exhibitors and more than 20000 visitors to see the latest in Forestry and Ag tech while having a great time. This was the first time the FCoE has participated in the Field Days as part of the Centre’s outreach efforts.

🌿🌲 International Day of Forests & World Wood Day

Today celebrates both the importance of forests and the value of wood as a sustainable, renewable material, with this year’s theme of Forests and Economies.

At the Forestry Centre of Excellence, research, innovation and education support a strong future for Australia’s forest and wood products industries. By strengthening skills, advancing timber innovation and fostering collaboration, the centre contributes to sustainable forest management and industry development.

On this shared day of recognition, we acknowledge the role forests and wood products play in supporting communities, jobs and environmental outcomes.

Our new building is almost ready! 🎉

Over the past year we’ve had a construction camera capturing the progress, and we’ve turned it into a 30-second time-lapse covering May 2025 to February 2026. It’s a great behind-the-scenes look at how the site has come together and the key milestones along the way.

The new facility is designed to support growers, processors and the wider forestry sector through research, technology and collaboration.

We’re excited to welcome you on 14 May for our Showcase as we move into our new home.

The $16 million Forestry Centre of Excellence is officially open in Mount Gambier🌲👏

This new purpose-built facility brings government, industry and Adelaide University together in a 10-year collaboration supporting innovation, sustainability and workforce capability across the forest and timber sector.

Showcasing the use of regional plantation timber and co-located with TAFE SA, the Technical College and university campus, the centre strengthens Mount Gambier’s position as a national leader in forestry research and education.
