With under 1,000 bottles available across the country of our Montvalley Reserve Shiraz 2023, this one will fly.

The palate has savoury, spicy flavours with vanilla oak lingering in the background which will see it age with a lovely complexity for many years. Its ripe fruit tannins are balanced with dark fruits of the forest. You'll be reaching for another glass as the smooth long finish tingles your tastebuds!

This is a cracking example of the finer style medium weight Hunter Shiraz, where chalky tannins provide a good balance with the sweet spicy fruit.

A medium bodied, hand picked delight

We picked the Semillon Wednesday during the night and it might be our best Semillon yet - smaller berries but nice ripe flavours.

Night harvesting allows grapes to be picked when they are at their coolest, which helps to concentrate the aromas and flavours. Cooler temperatures also aid in the fermentation process and ensures less oxidation of the fruit.

A great start to harvest.

Hi everyone,

Thought you might like a glimpse of Montvalley. A friend stayed recently and took this wonderful video footage.

Cradled against the magnificent backdrop of the Brokenback Range, the Mount View wine region is located two hours north of Sydney.

With a distinctive combination of soil, nutrients and a local micro climate, the vineyards have a unique "terroir” of flavour and character.

With its rich dark red soil, the land was originally used for grazing cattle. The first vineyards were planted in the 1860s. New plantings commenced in the 1960s and are continuing to expand. Most of the vineyards are on the slopes and the foothills of the Brokenback Range between Mt View and Mt Bright and are approximately 100-200 metres above sea level.

Winters are mild and summers are hot and humid. 70% of the rain falls between October and March with the highest rainfall often prior to and during harvest.

The atmosphere of Mount View is quite different from other wine growing areas of the Hunter Valley with the vines being greener, lusher and more vigorous and the roadside flowers blooming more profusely and brightly.

It has been a perfect start to the growing season with mostly dry conditions in the Hunter Valley. There are no pest or disease pressures, and the health of the vines is fantastic. It has been the best start to the season in years.

In late October we entered the flowering stages. Each fragile inflorescence, which is the very early development of the grape bunches, begins to form and drier weather conditions are more favourable during this time.

At this delicate period the caps on the clusters will begin to fall and open which then kickstarts development of the grapes. It is crucial that monitoring and observations occur regularly to keep an eye on progress and for any undesirables that may attempt to encroach.

Other work includes de-suckering, wire lifting, and shoot thinning which helps to increase ventilation and sunlight pe*******on.

The roses are also blooming. Roses in vineyards serve as a good sign as they act as early warning systems, helping to detect potential threats such as pests and diseases before they affect the vines. They also attract beneficial insects that help control pests, making them a valuable addition to vineyard management practices.

Overall spring is a very busy time in the vineyard and all going well it sets you up for a fantastic vintage.

Two of our frontline staff are pictured, Chris and Gilby on wire lifting and tucking duty.

Last month, TAFE NSW pruning workshops ran at Montvalley to allow the TAFE Diploma of Viticulture students hands on training in a functioning vineyard.

Each student undergoes close observation and instruction by Montvalley Viticulturist Chris Hunt who has worked on the vineyard for over 20 years and who also works for TAFE NSW teaching viticulture and vineyard practices.

The students are taught the nature of the grapevine, the morphology, physiology and correct pruning techniques to enhance health and longevity as well as a focus on quality and yield.

These practical sessions are highly desired by the viticulture students who are interested in obtaining and fine tuning more hands on skills and techniques throughout their two-year Diploma studies.
