Yesterday, Professor Terry Rose Southern Cross University and Sam North Primary Industries and Regional Development spoke at the Riverine Plains "station" of the Farmers helping Farmers field tour at Burramine. The site looked at a long term investment at increasing plant diversity through multi species and summer cover crops. It was a pleasure having conversations with people that have tried similar methods and to hear people's experiences.

🚨Project announcement: Digital Twin Adoption for Water & Soil Management
We’re excited to announce a new Riverine Plains project supported by Grains Research and Development Corporation exploring how Digital Twin technology can support better water and soil management in grain systems.

Working with Riverina farmers and Agronomeye, the project will explore how digital tools can bring together paddock, soil and weather data to support better on-farm decisions. For some farms across the region, this could include helping to better understand and manage waterlogging, while also exploring opportunities to improve soil water use, productivity and resilience. We’re looking forward to working with farmers to test what Digital Twin tools can really offer in the paddock and share what we learn along the way.

What can a $2,000 scholarship help an emerging drought-resilience researcher do?

For 2024 Vic Hub scholarship recipient Stephanie Rosestone, the support contributed to her research behind Museum of Future Water, which was later highly commended at the 2026 Victorian Museums and Galleries Awards.

For fellow 2024 recipient Hameer Jhiknaria, the scholarship enabled access to premium GIS tools and more advanced modelling for his research into agricultural drought vulnerability across north-west Victoria.

Different disciplines and different research questions, but both show what a relatively small amount of targeted support can help make possible.

The Vic Hub’s Drought Resilience Scholarships support Honours and post-graduate students whose research can build understanding of drought resilience in Victoria and contribute knowledge relevant to farmers and regional communities.

Applications are now closing for the 2026 round, with five $2,000 scholarships available.

With more than 20 years’ experience in chickpea breeding, agricultural research and innovation, including 15 years leading the National Chickpea Breeding Program, Kristy brings a wealth of expertise to the team. We’re looking forward to seeing her experience in research, project management and leadership contribute to meaningful outcomes for our members and producers.

A great day of learning was had at our Soil and Farming Systems Field Day. Uwe Grewer from the University of Southern Queensland - Australia demonstrated the new Soil Amelioration Decision-Support Tool, showing how big data can inform soil management decisions.
Our Field Trial Manager, Matt de Roos then provided an update on the NSW Long Term Trials before the group visited the Uncle Tobys' trial site. David Leah from InterGrain Cereal Breeding discussed the role and benefits of oats and provided a first look at an upcoming new oat variety.
Our Project Manager, Sabita Duwal shared key learnings from trials, highlighting the influence of seasonal conditions on vetch biomass, nitrogen fixation and residue mineralisation, and the importance of termination timing. The trial provided a valuable backdrop for discussion and helped identify opportunities for future research.

Important information on movement of Agricultural harvest machinery ⬇

As harvest season approaches, operators travelling under the National Class 1 Agricultural Vehicle and Combination Mass and Dimension Exemption Notice 2026 (No. 1) are reminded of important clarifications to the law.

The conditions of the notice permits eligible agricultural vehicles and combinations to:
✅ travel with one trailer or implement for combinations using a prime mover or rigid truck as the hauling unit;
✅travel with two trailers or implements for combinations using an agricultural vehicle/machine as a hauling unit;
✅be a maximum length of up to 35 metres;
✅be a maximum mass of up to 45 tonnes, with a maximum axle limit of up to 12 tonnes;
✅travel up to 25 or 50 kilometres per hour pending braking method and tow mass ratio;
✅travel with a pilot and es**rt based on combination width;
✅have warning signs, flags and lights attached.

Our Victoria Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hub representative Michelle Pardy and member Jane Waser recently attended the Thriving Women conference hosted by WoTL in Bendigo.

Powerful sessions with Cathy McGowan, Kemi Nekvapil & Olympia Yarger honed in on the role of personal networks in achieving change, and challenged thinking on choice, values and experience in leadership and personal and business resilience.
