We recently sat down with our founder, Dr. John Kirk, to talk about the early days of Clonakilla and the Canberra wine region.

One of his sons, Jeremy, suggested planting Viognier. In 1986, we received around 100 very small and rare Viognier rootlings and planted them here. Forty years later, the vines are still producing beautiful wine.

It’s a variety that has long been part of what we do here.

Our 2025 Viognier is now available:

At the end of vintage each year, we take our team out for dinner.

It’s become tradition and is our way of saying thank you for a huge season, especially to our vineyard and winery teams.

Partners and families come along too. We are keenly aware of how the long hours of vintage affect loved ones and want to thank them as well.

We open a few special bottles from the cellar, share a really delicious meal, and celebrate all we’ve achieved.

It’s something we look forward to in our year and is a small way to honour the people who make Clonakilla what it is.

The forecast for Murrumbateman across this Anzac Day long weekend is looking clear and sunny, and we’re open each day.

Autumn is a really lovely time to visit the cellar door. Our flower gardens are blooming and our newly released 2024 Shiraz Viognier is available for tasting.

It’s often a busy weekend, so it’s worth booking ahead if you’re thinking of visiting.

The 2024 vintage was both heartbreaking and brilliant.

October frosts reduced yields significantly, but the season that followed was evenly warm, with rainfall at the right times. Late summer and early autumn were glorious, and the fruit that survived delivered powerful aromas and intense flavour.

The perfume here is really something. A classic Shiraz Viognier.

There are plenty of people behind what we do here at Clonakilla - here’s another one of our team members.

Meet Grace.

Originally from Hobart, Grace has studied and worked in viticulture in South Australia. This is her first vintage with Clonakilla, though she’s been working in wine for the past five years and has been with us since May. You may have met her at the cellar door on weekends, where she brings a real warmth and depth of knowledge to each tasting.

This week, our vintage team were in the vineyard before sunrise, handpicking Shiraz from our Euroka Park block.
Conditions for picking have been kind this year, which is never guaranteed!

Handpicking allows us to bring the fruit in gently and preserve the integrity of the bunches. We love including a proportion of whole bunches in our ferments, and have done so since 1993.

It’s a delicate process and a labour of love, but an important part of how we capture the beauty of this land in bottle.
