Helm Wines Helm Wines is an award winning family owned winery located at Murrumbateman in the Canberra District

Helm Wines was established in 1973 by Ken and Judith Helm and was one of the first commercial wineries in the Canberra District Wine Region. Located just outside of Murrumbateman, approximately 30 km north of Canberra, the winery is still family owned and operated and was given a 5 star rating in James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2012. It is well known for producing award-winning Rieslings and Cabernet Sauvignons. The winemakers are Ken Helm AM and daughter Stephanie, who are fourth and fifth generation descendants of German vinedressers from the Rhineland, who established vineyards near Albury and Rutherglen in 1860s.

Just a few things happening at Helm W**es in September. The echidnas are having fun amongst the vines as mating season kicks off.
Ken is busy getting the vines ready for a busy spring and growing season, fingers crossed these mild mornings continue 🤞
Our rare Cabernet Sauvignon weekend was a massive hit, watch our social media for some news on some great red packs we’ve put together as a result.
And our vines are in their “wooly” element. The stage just before budburst where they look like they have a wooly cardy on, just waiting for the chill in the air to disappear. Ken estimates that budburst is about 10 days away, as long as the sun keeps shining!

The 2027 Halliday W**e Companion has just announced their 2027 Australian w**ery ratings and Helm W**es from Murrumbateman has achieved the Top Five Red Star rating – truly the best of the best.

Helm Rielsings have been rated as high as 96 points out of 100 and at least one other w**e at 95 to obtain this Halliday rating.

The rating means: Outstanding w**ery regularly producing w**es of exemplary quality and typicity. Will have at least two w**es rated at 95 points or above and has typically held a 5-star rating for the previous 3 years. Helm W**es has held a 5-star rating for the last 15 years. Helm Premium Riesling 2025 and The Helm Classic Dry 2025 were rated 96 and 95 points respectively.

The Canberra W**es District is small in comparison to just about any other w**e region. It is less than a 5th of the size of the Hunter Valley, but its reputation is internationally known for the production of ultra-premium w**es from producers like Helm W**es.

What did the critics say about the 2013?

2013 Vintage Tasted: Apr 2016 James Suckling says "I like what shiraz brings to the table here, fleshing out the cabernet to add a more complete palate, adding plums to the leafy cassis characters of cabernet and bringing overall balance to the table."

Ken's tasting notes says the 2013 will cellar beautifully until 2030, maybe it's time to bring a bottle out for a comparison tasting 🍷🤔

Mike Bennie from The W**e Front has given it a 92 so we think this red blend needs to be on your winter tables, now, don't you?
