The Woolly Buster Wine Company

The Woolly Buster Wine Company The Woolly Buster Wine Company is the company of two mates (Woolly & Buster) who are having a crack at making wine from their hobby Shiraz vineyard.

The Woolly Buster Wine Company is just that, the company of two mates - Keith "Woolly" Woolford and Brent "Buster" Lello - who are having a crack at making wine from their hobby Shiraz vineyards in Murrumbateman NSW. Together we have around 200 vines growing in this Cool Climate wine growing region, perhaps enough for 300 bottles or so...enough to keep us trouble for a month or two ;-)

This page follows the trials and tribulations of the wine making process, from the very first vintage in 2014.

Bottling Day at Woolly Buster Wines!

After 2 failed vintages due to mildew, it was great to finally get the previous vintages from barrels into bottles.

The “Sh*t Show” Shiraz from the 2020 vintage also made it into the bottle. After a pre-bottle tasting last night, we put the Smoke Taint Shiraz through its paces along with the other barrels. Kym could pick up a faint smoke aroma, but too be honest, neither Woolly or myself could pick it. In any case it was deemed a pleasant drop and good enough to bottle.

So we have over 375 bottles of yhe 2020 and 2019 vintages along with a blend of vintages - 70% 2020, 6% 2019 and 24% 2018.

Wth the weather warming up and the chill of early Spring seemingly behind us, the vines have powered into top gear, growing 1cm per day - at least.

Doesn’t really feel like spring until these bud babies arrive.

With plenty of rain over winter and into spring, the soil moisture is high and with daytime temperatures rising, the vines at Woolly Buster are well and truly springing to life.

Fingers crossed for a bumper Vintage 2022 🤞

Recent visitors to the Woolly Buster Wine Company were Jordan and Dana who are now meandering their way out past the Black Stump and the Back of Beyond.

They took the time to take this great shot of our latest Woolly Buster offering as the sun set out in Mungo country.

Nice one guys. Hope you enjoy the wine!

These little bastards are back. These are grapevine caterpillars that evolve into the grapevine moth. They eat the leaves and reduce the productivity of the vine.

Several years ago, the Buster Block had an infestation of these buggers and it took myself and Bevin 2 days to pick them off by hand. We filled 2 big buckets 😣.

Not wanting to repeat that episode, so spent the lunch hour today spraying them with Dipel Bio friendly caterpillar killer. Hopefully that does the trick 🙏.

Action is heating up in the Woolly Buster vineyards. Bud Burst is well and truly under way. With plenty of winter rain, the soil moisture is perfect and with the increase in daily temperatures (apart from the arctic blast this week) the vines are responding.

Fingers crossed for a great growing season and Vintage 2021.

Bottling, Blending and Barrel Day.

For the first time ever, we now have 3 full 100 litre barrels - one with Vintage 2020, one with an interesting blend of Vintages 18,19 and 20 to go along with the Vintage 2019 already in the barrel.

We also have 92 bottles of the blend of Vintage 18 and 19.

Still no smoke taint discernible on the Vintage 2020 and we would have expected to see the smoke scourge by now so fingers crossed for a good result now that it is resting with the oak staves.

Taste Test Night at Woolly Buster HQ.

The 2018 is already in the bottle and being enjoyed by some lucky punters. The 2018/19 blend and the 2019 are in the barrel and yet to be bottled.

The 2018 has a fragrance of star anise and pepper with red currant and plum with a lick of eucalyptus too boot. The palate continues with the red fruits along with vanilla. Lingering red fruits and good acid to finish.

The 2018/19 blend is a level up. Earthy, dusty chocolate and black cherries on the nose with full ripe red fruit flavours and that lick of vanilla again. The tannins are subtle and soft. This is slightly better.

The 2019 is yet another level again. Chocolate, dark roasted coffee beans over black cherries, plums and allspice on the nose. Soft and mellow in the mouth with lingering dark fruits and silky tannins.

A good hit out tonight. Tomorrow we bottle the 2018/19 blend and put the 2020 into barrel - if it’s smoke taint free 🤪.
