Earlier this year I made the decision to close my business. It was a decision not made lightly, but the best decision for me personally.

It has been my pleasure to work with Traditonal Owners and proponents on some incredible projects and am looking forward to the next chapter in my career.

Thank you to all those who supported me as a small, female owned and operated business, it will never be forgotten.

This year's National Reconciliation Week theme is "Be Brave. Make Change." and the challenge is being sent to all Australians to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can make change for the benefit of all Australians. It's a time to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. As industry consultants, we strive to protect and preserve Indigenous cultural heritage and work closely with Traditional Owners to ensure that their voices are heard and respected where their heritage and country is impacted.

Be Brave and speak up. Make Change by following through with actions you can take to affect change.

HISTORY UNCOVERED AT POSTMANS RIDGE NEAR TOOWOOMBA 👍😀

Historic sandstone kerbing dating back to 1928 has been uncovered by Transport and Main Roads during works to rep[ace a single-lane bridge over Rocky Creek at Murphy's Creek Road.

Surprisingly, it has remained intact throughout several upgrades and repairs.

"The sandstone was arranged to help minimise erosion and direct water from Murphy's Creek Road into Rocky Creek", according to Advance Archaeology director Sher Mitchell.

The local community wanted to conserve it and it's been relocated to the nearby Postmans Ridge Pioneer Memorial Hall.

Julia and I have an exciting week coming up! These stones by the end of next week will hopefully resemble the kerbing and channeling orientation they once had.

Advance Archaeology has undertaken extensive work on historical bridges in recent years including UAV assessments and 3D modelling, historical research, archaeological assessment of the bridge and surrounding areas, and documentary production.
We also undertook 3D modelling of the bridge to capture the structural integrity and rehabilitation works carried out to date.

The road-rail bridge in Queensland's southeast dates to the 1880s, demonstrating exquisite engineering work of the time and the evolution of Queensland’s bridge construction. The bridge was so largely constructed due to public appeal, as the two former bridges in place were continuously being damaged or destroyed by flooding. Located on site were timber posts, which appear to be remnants of the former gate at the bridge. During this time, a gatekeeper was used to open and close the gates each time a car, horse, or train was travelling through. Instead of a salary, they were provided with accommodation located near the bridge. There are stories by relatives of one of the gatekeeper families telling how Aboriginal Peoples would come through on their travels to corroboree gatherings. They would camp under the bridge and spear fish in the river before moving on with their travels.

Kicking off Archaeology Week with a ‘get to know you’ with our Archaeologist and Company Director, Sher Mitchell.

Sher has lived all over Australia and in West Yorkshire, UK and feels well versed in the colloquialisms of many places. A bit of a dabbler jack and of all trades, Sher settled on a career in archaeology after working extensively in retail, risk management and banking.

Sher and partner Chris started Advance Archaeology P/L in 2017 but she began her studies in anthropology and archaeology in 2008. Moving to employment and fieldwork in the industry in 2011, she fast developed a love for cultural heritage and her skill set includes, landscape predictive modelling, lithics and bone identification.

Since then, Sher has worked extensively in museums collection accessioning (including for York Museums Trust in York, UK) and has had experience across a wide variety of sectors including construction, linear infrastructure, mining, working directly for Traditional Owner groups; and the private sector.

Sher has a Masters degree in Archaeology and is currently developing a research project for a future PhD.

Sher has a natural ability with people from all walks of life and enjoys the challenges and rewards that the cultural heritage industry offers.

Earlier this year we undertook a project to excavate and record stone pitching in the Lockyer Valley Region. This is such an exciting, and ongoing project so we can’t wait to bring some more updates on the developments here.
