Attended the Ekka last weekend with the family after a 20-year hiatus! It was truly magical to witness the vibrant display of Queensland produce, livestock, dogs, cats, cakes, and artworks. Amidst the array of attractions, two pieces of farm machinery particularly caught my eye - a massive CaseIH 715HP tracked tractor imported from the US and an ag-tech robot proudly made right here in regional Queensland by SwarmFarm Robotics

Having previously worked in Bundy during the 1980s manufacturing Sugar Cane Harvesters, I deeply understand the significance of fostering and expanding manufacturing enterprises in regional Queensland. Neither of the two Bundaberg manufacturers of harvesters exist today ...gone offshore ...with a loss of over 1500 skilled metal tradies and engineers!

One sign from the Queensland manufacturer immediately grabbed my attention, shedding light on a critical challenge faced now by many regional manufacturers - the recruitment dilemma. How can they entice technical specialists to choose regional Queensland over competing opportunities in Brisbane's tech sector and mining industry?

A quick chat with ClaudeAI suggested several ways of addressing this pressing concern; proposed solutions include offering competitive remote work options, forming partnerships with universities and local colleges, and implementing comprehensive career development programs.

I would add that signing up to groups like the mefsc.org.au is a great way to network... the MEFSC is a grassroots NFP established to support and grow the manufacturing sector in and around the Sunshine Coast, but there are similar groups all over Queensland.

For those interested, I asked ClaudeAI to develop a more comprehensive Risk Management Plan encompassing various risks encountered by regional manufacturers ....this may serve as a valuable resource for any upcoming strategic planning workshops you are scheduling.

Are you considering going freelance? Better check this out!
To be a successful freelance management consultant, you need to be confident in your abilities, have realistic expectations, be able to work independently, have a lot of confidence in your ability to do what you do well, and be willing to work with a variety of people.
As a freelancer, you're on your own. No one is there to back you up, especially when you run into problems. If you're having trouble making ends meet, getting paid enough to cover basic expenses, or finding the right clients, then the buck stops with you!
So what to do? Well, here are 5 tips that will maybe help you along your journey to becoming a more confident freelance management consultant.
1. You need to have realistic expectations of the kinds of work you will get and the level of income you can make as a freelancer. When you have unrealistic expectations of your potential income, you are far more likely to become frustrated, give up, and as the saying goes "go and get a proper job".
2. You need to be confident in your abilities. When you are not confident in your abilities, you are far more likely to face push-back from potential clients and become frustrated.
3. You will most definitely need to explore opportunities for networking with local, regional industry focus, or mentoring groups. This resource can be a lifesaver, helping you connect with potential clients, gain new contacts, and discover new opportunities to increase your income stream. You'll also get some valuable advice from other freelancers and get a chance to network and build your professional network.
4. You will need to be super comfortable with working independently. Initially, you have to be able to handle all the tasks and responsibilities of running a business yourself. We suggest it may pay you to write yourself a detailed job description that includes a timeline for each task. This will also assist you to develop your business plan and will enable you to estimate potential earnings.
Note: If and when your earnings are sufficient you may need consider farming out the more mundane and routine tasks to other freelancers / virtual assistants.
5. Lastly…..get feedback! Getting feedback from clients and colleagues is one of the best ways to determine how good you really are at what you do. It helps you improve your skills by allowing you to see what you need to improve on, and it gives you the opportunity to ask questions about something new.

In these trying times it is essential that you give your employees the ability to identify the risks they will encounter at your workplace and give them the means to properly evaluate, communicate and address them...safely. A good start is to introduce "risk" as a topic at each tailgate meeting. Maybe review applicable Codes of Practice and Regulations.....

This article makes an interesting read. Produced by the US National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) it suggests that the US manufacturing sector will not get back to normal production levels until 2022. One manufacturing group identified four key areas they were focusing on during the crisis... 1.Safety by introducing site specific procedures and monitoring. 2. Keep it Local by following all State and Local regulatory initiatives, 3. Keep it Simple by cancelling unnecessary travel, meetings, reducing agendas and 4. Improving communications with the supply chain and customers. One of the key outcomes of the last few months, they state, is an increasing recognition and reliance among manufacturers on new digital technologies to help them survive and recover from the crisis and recognising that VIRTUAL is here to stay.
