Winter flu season is here, and if you've had more empty desks than usual lately, it's worth asking what you're actually doing to support your team - not just their output.

At Real+, 360-degree health is one of our core values. In practice, that means we organise flu jabs for the whole team each year. No one's being forced into anything, but making it easy and available sends a message. We care about our people beyond their to-do lists.

Vitamins, sleep, stress levels, these are the first things to slip in winter. We're not hibernating, even when it feels like we should be.

A culture that's purely productivity-focused will always have a blind spot here. People don't just bring their work ethic through the door. They bring their germs too. (If you're sick - please, just stay home.)

We're trained to treat stress as the enemy, but it's actually the thing that powers us.

Your body has a whole stress system running in the background, firing off warning signals all day. Hungry? It lets you know. Tired? Same. Walk past a dark alley at night and something tells you not to go down there, that's stress doing its job.

Healthy stress pushes you to act. I use it to fuel momentum, to get on top of problems, to do something with my day.

Where it turns on us is when it never switches off. Prolonged, heightened, unmanageable stress is the kind that wears the body down.

So the skill is in the managing. Working out how to use the good kind and keep the rest in check.

Good stress is good. Just learn to tell the difference.

Not everyone on your team is struggling for the same reason. That's the thing nobody wants to say out loud - but if you're applying the same fix to three different problems, you're not actually fixing any of them.

Burnout is a physiological response to prolonged stress. It's not a workflow issue. It needs a real conversation.Frustration is different. The person shows up, they're present - but their energy is stuck. "I'm so sick of this process" over and over. That's fixable, but only if someone actually listens.

Poor performance is the one that gets avoided. We'd rather call it burnout, call it frustration, call it anything that lets us sidestep the accountability conversation. But if we can't name it, we can't address it.Figure out what you're actually dealing with first.

An 🍎 should never try to be a 🥩

When we measure ourselves against other people or other businesses, it's usually to spotlight what we haven't done or who we're not.

Here's how I see it. Most people aren't comparing an apple to an apple. They're not even comparing an apple to a banana. They're holding an apple up against a steak. Both might sit in the food world somewhere, but they've got nothing in common. An apple's job is to be the best apple it can be.

That doesn't mean you ignore everyone else. Look around, get curious, see what's working out there and ask whether there's something worth grafting back onto your own tree. Just don't use it as a stick to beat yourself with. You never really know what it's like to walk in someone else's shoes.

So yeah, comparison's fine by me. As long as it's used for good, not evil.

Early in your career it’s easy to think that property management is all about systems. Get your processes right, stay organised, know the legislation back to front, and you’d be a great PM.

Turns out that’s maybe half of it!

The more time you spend in this industry as a PM, the clearer it becomes that what makes a PM truly great comes down to a handful of human skills nobody really talks about, and they make all the difference.

As kids we’re curious about everything. Why this, why that.

Somewhere along the way most of us lose that. I don't know exactly what does it. Tiredness, maybe. A fear of things changing. Either way, the questions stop coming.

We're heading into an era where automation is moving faster than anything we've seen, and curiosity has never mattered more. Speed of curiosity, even.

Being curious means sitting with a viewpoint that isn't yours. Considering an option you'd written off. Accepting there's a whole world out there worth exploring.

It's one of the most fundamental, exciting things about being human. Hold onto it.
