Tasmania is one of Australia's fastest-growing new vehicle market in 2026. 📊

1,911 new vehicles were sold in September, up 8.5%. Year to date, growth is 5.9%, the strongest of any state or territory, while the national market is flat.
Here's what's changing:

🚙 Two in three new vehicles sold were SUVs (65.8%)
⚡ Electrified vehicles reached 42.0% of light-vehicle sales, almost double a year ago
🌏 China is now Tasmania's No.1 source market, and the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro was the state's best seller
🛻 Ute and van sales fell 14.0% as private buyers held off

For Tasmanian workshops, dealers and aftermarket businesses, this means building high-voltage skills, covering parts and diagnostics for new brands, and servicing an ageing fleet of utes and trucks.

Tasmanians rely on their cars more than most. But our vehicles are also getting older.

Tasmania has 895 vehicles for every 1,000 people, while the average passenger vehicle on our roads is 13.2 years old.

For TACC, that raises an important question about road safety, particularly when older vehicles change hands without a roadworthy inspection.

TACC is advocating for mandatory point-of-sale inspections for vehicles aged 20 years and older, helping give buyers greater confidence in what they're purchasing.
