2025: A Year of Progress in Automotive Training

This has been a significant year for our industry. Apprenticeship numbers have climbed steadily as young Australians increasingly recognise career opportunities in automotive trades—choosing workshops over lecture halls and finding work with genuine job security.

Our training departments have been busy. Record numbers of technicians have completed EV and hybrid training programmes, preparing for a transition that's already underway on Australian roads.

In Tasmania, the new Hobart Automotive Training Facility is progressing, an important infrastructure investment that will create opportunities for local technicians and apprentices.

From government engagement on apprenticeship incentives to EV training delivery, 2025 has been the year our industry moved from planning to action.

The trajectory is clear. The question is whether your business is keeping pace.

👉 Read the full story in our digital magazine to understand why now is the time to consider apprenticeships and upskill your team for the changing automotive landscape.

As 2025 draws to a close, our CEO Peter Jones reflects on an extraordinary first ten months with VACC, and the incredible people who make our industry what it is.

From Geelong to Maffra, Mildura to Hobart, Peter has witnessed the warmth, passion, and dedication that define our industry. Whether tackling new vehicle technologies, mentoring apprentices, or maintaining personal service, our Members are proving why automotive remains one of the most dynamic sectors in the economy.

"Our members are the heartbeat of this organisation. They represent generations of skill and resilience, constantly evolving in an environment that is more complex and exciting than ever before."

Despite challenges from regulatory changes to rapid technological evolution, what shines through is an industry full of problem-solvers who create solutions.

Looking ahead to 2026, our focus remains clear: ensuring every member has a strong, sustainable future.

The automotive industry is facing one of the most severe skills shortages in decades, and today's announcement from the Federal Government to halve key apprenticeship incentives has sparked serious concern across the sector.

From 1 January 2026, employer incentives for priority apprenticeships will be cut from $5,000 to $2,500, making it even harder for workshops that are already finding it difficult to attract and train new technicians. At a time when demand for skilled labour is growing, reducing support risks widening the gap even further.

TACC is calling for a balanced approach that recognises the needs of today’s automotive workforce while supporting the transition to cleaner technologies. Our members remain committed to training the next generation, but they need the policy settings that back them.

🚗 The 3D Shift Transforming Aussie Workshops 🚗

Imagine manufacturing custom engine parts layer by layer, bringing extinct vintage car components back to life, or creating production-ready carbon fibre parts, all from your own workshop. This isn't science fiction; it's happening right now across Australia.

Workshops from around Australia are leading the charge, turning 3D printing from a prototyping tool into a game-changing business strategy. Early adopters have evolved into full-scale manufacturers, creating entirely new revenue streams that didn't exist just years ago.

The impact?
✅ Custom parts made on demand, no minimum orders required
✅ Impossible-to-find vintage car parts resurrected
✅ Carbon fibre components
✅ Manufacturing democratised for small operators

From solving real engineering problems to keeping classic Holdens and vintage Fords on the road, 3D printing is proving that the future of automotive manufacturing isn't necessarily bigger or more centralised; sometimes it's as simple as a machine in a workshop, building tomorrow's solutions one layer at a time.

Members' voices drive real change in the automotive industry. 🔧

In the October edition of Automotive magazine, CEO Peter Jones explains how member feedback is transforming policy outcomes—from pushing for Luxury Car Tax reform to strengthening e-bike safety regulations.

Every frustration, idea, and experience shared becomes the foundation of our advocacy work. When members speak up about outdated regulations, unfair taxes, or safety concerns, we take those real-world insights straight to government officials and policymakers.

The result? Meetings at the highest levels. Media coverage that matters. Policy work that protects your business.

💡 "Our advocacy is only as strong as the feedback we receive."

Our Members' stories matter. Their challenges shape our industry's future.
