Hunter Equine Vet Equine ambulatory service with special interests in reproduction, racetrack practice, foal medicine and lameness evaluation.

With 30 years of experience working as an Equine Vet I have had the opportunity to work with some very special horses and clients. The bulk of my career was spent working at the iconic Lindsay Park Stud operated by the Hayes family where I was fortunate to develop my reproductive and racetrack skills under the guidance of Dr Campbell Baker. We have trained our own racehorses and experienced the thrill of having a good one! Continuing education is of paramount importance and I attend local and overseas meetings to keep up with latest technologies and ideas. I am also a long term member of the AVA and EVA. Servicing Newcastle surrounds and the Lower Hunter.

Early scans; 2 out of 2 in foal, one mare with twins. Mares cannot carry twin pregnancies to full term, we need to reduce to a single pregnancy by applying pressure per re**um on the vesicle in utero. We aim to reduce the smaller of the two pregnancies. The mare is sedated & provided with pain relief.

Field anaesthesia & castration; preparation is paramount. Once a clinical exam has been done and our patient anaesthetised we roll them into dorsal recumbency to allow good access to our surgical site. We emasculate and tie off the testicular artery & spermatic cord together. The median raphe is trimmed and we wait for him to recover. No humans were harmed in this procedure 🤣😂

Part of my job being an Equine Vet is having the pleasure of meeting many beautiful stable cats, dogs, pigs, goats etc. At times I am called upon to help these souls transition to their final place of rest. Every euthanasia is hard for a Vet 😪. I will miss this little bloke dearly as he was part of the furniture. Rest soundly & chase Sal in doggy heaven Vinnie ❤️❤️

Keeping track of a tendon injury during the rehabilitation phase is important before increasing your workload by increasing the duration and intensity. Tendon injuries heal at different rates for different horses so it is wise to tailor your horse’s rehabilitation programme.

Did you know; donkeys are of higher risk at castration due to their testicular artery size generally being larger than horses. Best to get them done younger.
Carol was scanned in foal via abdominal ultrasound. There will be tiny pitter patter of foal hooves in the next few months ❤️

Your horses eyes are fragile. Seemingly small problems can result in the loss of vision or the eye. Cataracts can be congenital or develop over time. Any mass around an eye should be assessed by a Vet. Corneal ulceration usually presents as a weepy, closed eye with swelling of the eyelids

With autumn continuing to be warm please be vigilant for "summer sores" otherwise known as Habronema lesions. Granulomatous, firm ulcerated areas can form and persist as a non healing wound. They can commonly localise in the eyelids, urethral or***ce, lips and sheath. They can cause an emergency if they block the tip of the urethra, preventing urination.
