Hunter Equine Vet

Hunter Equine Vet Equine ambulatory service with special interests in reproduction, racetrack practice, foal medicine and lameness evaluation.

With 30 years of experience working as an Equine Vet I have had the opportunity to work with some very special horses and clients. The bulk of my career was spent working at the iconic Lindsay Park Stud operated by the Hayes family where I was fortunate to develop my reproductive and racetrack skills under the guidance of Dr Campbell Baker. We have trained our own racehorses and experienced the th

rill of having a good one! Continuing education is of paramount importance and I attend local and overseas meetings to keep up with latest technologies and ideas. I am also a long term member of the AVA and EVA. Servicing Newcastle surrounds and the Lower Hunter.

With autumn continuing to be warm please be vigilant for "summer sores" otherwise known as Habronema lesions. Granulomatous, firm ulcerated areas can form and persist as a non healing wound. They can commonly localise in the eyelids, urethral or***ce, lips and sheath. They can cause an emergency if they block the tip of the urethra, preventing urination.

A little patient who was gelded today, Darcy Baltussen had a little fun vocalising what the he may have been dreaming about after his surgery. His operation and recovery was routine. As always we take our responsibility seriously: some are too cute not to talk 😊

Early morning call to a yearling today. Horses will never cease to amaze me at the damage they can do when they have nothing but the best of facilities & staff. Thankfully mouths heal well.

Progression of a scary injury for staff. We managed to clamp bleeders and debride the wound to assess whether closure was possible. Under very challenging conditions of wind, sand & debris making its way into the wound the entire time I was trying to.close it, the wire laceration came together reasonably well. Thankfully I had a human paramedic & wonderful volunteers at Hunter Horse Haven to assist me

Skin! With continued wet weather in our region, the natural barrier to infection, the skin or "epidermis" can be having a tough time doing it's job. Rain scald and greasy heel, (pictured here) are more common in wet conditions. Even though these conditions look simple to diagnose, they can have complex causes, (bacterial/fungal/immune/photosensitivity) just to name a few.
Treatment starts with keeping the affected areas dry, changing/washing rugs (choose a hypoallergenic detergent), gently removing/cleaning the crusts (debriding) the area with an antiseptic or medicated wash and bandaging limbs, (in the case of greasy heel lesions). Please contact your Veterinarian if symptoms persist.
