Most online courses fail because they’re designed against how our brains actually learn.
Here’s what learning science tells us about engagement:
🧠 Cognitive overload is the #1 reason learners drop out.
When we flood the brain with too much at once, it shuts down.
🧠 Shallow interaction (clicking buttons, dragging elements) isn’t true engagement.
Real engagement happens when learners actively RETREIVE knowledge - i.e., wrestle with it.
🧠 Information architecture matters.
Courses built around the instructor’s logic (instead of the learner’s tasks) collapse motivation and retention.
I’ve written a full article unpacking these principles, with practical ways to apply them.
