Every cartridge recycled makes a difference!

Today we dropped off another big bag of used printer cartridges at Australia Post, where they'll begin their journey to Close The Loop to be transformed into useful everyday products such as pens, rulers, road-paving asphalt, aluminium products and synthetic timber boards.

Here's why it matters...

Over 350 million printer cartridges end up in landfill every year, where they can take more than 1,000 years to break down.

A single mono toner cartridge produces around 4.8 kg of greenhouse gas emissions during manufacturing. By recycling cartridges instead of throwing them away, we help reduce waste, conserve valuable resources and lessen the need to manufacture new products from scratch.

The best part? Recycling your used printer cartridges is completely FREE.

Simply drop your empty ink and toner cartridges into our collection box at Simply Print, and we'll make sure they get to Close The Loop for recycling.

Together, we can keep thousands of cartridges out of landfill and help build a cleaner, greener future for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone who has already contributed. Every cartridge really does make a difference.

It was a pleasure to do a presentation to the members of Noosa Business Group this morning on "Canva Tips Every Printer Wishes You Knew."

Canva has revolutionised graphic design, making it easier than ever for businesses to create their own marketing material. As printers, we absolutely embrace Canva, but there are a few common pitfalls that can affect the quality of the finished printed product.

It was great to share some simple tips on getting the size right, using bleed correctly, aligning artwork, and avoiding a few of the common mistakes we see every day in the print shop.

A big thank you to everyone who attended and got a giggle at the oversized "business card". I hope everyone walked away with a little more confidence in preparing their Canva artwork for print.

If you'd like a copy of my Canva Pitfalls guide, just send me a message and I'll happily email you a copy.

Vinyl Of The Week

This week's spin is Van Halen – 1984.

Released in January 1984, this classic rock album gave us some of Van Halen's biggest hits, including Jump, Panama, I'll Wait, and Hot for Teacher.

Did you know the album title never actually appears as 1984 on the cover? Instead, it's written in Roman numerals as MCML###IV.

Another interesting fact is that this was the last Van Halen studio album to feature the legendary David Lee Roth as lead singer before he left the band later that year.

I'm playing Jump in today's video, the band's only US No. 1 hit. Eddie Van Halen's iconic keyboard riff was a departure from the band's usual guitar-driven sound, but it helped create one of the defining songs of the 1980s.

Do you have a favourite track from this album?

PRINT CONFESSION

Not all QR codes are created equal.

We've seen brochures and business cards with QR codes that stopped working because they were created using a service that charges an ongoing subscription.

Before creating a QR code, make sure it belongs to you forever.

At Simply Print, we can generate QR codes that keep working with no ongoing fees.

Printing Pitfalls #2 – Is your document really A4?

Here's a common one that catches people out.

Many programs (especially Microsoft Word) default to US Letter size instead of A4. They look almost identical on screen, but they're actually different sizes.

The result? When it's time to print, you can end up with unexpected white space at the top and bottom of the page because the artwork has to be reduced to fit.

Before you start designing, take 10 seconds to check your page size is set to A4 (210 × 297 mm).

It's a small check that can make a big difference to the finished result.

Canva. We love it... and sometimes it drives us crazy!

Hey, I’ll be honest. Us printers have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Canva.

The reality is Canva is here to stay, and that's a great thing. It has made professional-looking design accessible to everyone. The only challenge is that a design which looks fantastic on your screen doesn't always print the way you expect.

The good news is that with just a few simple steps, you can achieve amazing print results.

Here are our top Canva printing tips:

Download the correct PDF.
When your design is finished, select PDF - Best for documents and printing. Tick the Print option, change the colour format from RGB to CMYK, then open Advanced Settings and select Crop Marks and Bleed.

Don't forget the bleed.
Crop marks tell us where to trim, but the artwork also needs to extend past those trim marks. Simply drag your background colours and images beyond the edge of the Canva page so the bleed area is filled. This helps us produce a clean, professional finish with no unwanted white edges.

Use Canva's alignment guides.
Canva's centring guides are brilliant for lining up text and graphics. As you move an object, guide lines will appear to show when it's centred. Just remember that Canva will also align objects relative to other items on the page, so take a final look before exporting.

Choose the correct document size.
One of the most common mistakes we see is artwork created at the wrong dimensions. For example, an A4 document isn't the same proportions as a business card, and an A4 file can't simply be enlarged into a sharp banner.

Simply send us a link to your Canva project and we'll gladly have a look, completely free of charge. We'll let you know if anything could be improved before it goes to print.

A few minutes checking your artwork now can save a lot of disappointment later.
