Empowering others to plan, prepare and respond to health emergencies is at the heart of what we do. This week, Dr Ian Norton and the Respond Global HELPR 1 team were supporting Vanuatu to do just that.

HELPR 1 was recently tasked with providing fresh water to Ambae Island, where volcanic ash had made supplies undrinkable. HELPR 1 has an onboard desalination plant, capable of producing up to 25,000 litres of drinking water per day. Water is transferred to land using a pump system designed by the team. Whilst HELPR 1 is based in Vanuatu, she has the capacity and capability to support emergency and disaster response across the wider Pacific region.

HELPR-1 has this week been involved in a search and rescue operation to assist a stranded vessel in waters off the Solomon Islands. Passengers from MV Awka were transferred to HELPR-1 with some requiring medical attention from the onboard medical team. All passengers have now been safely transferred to land.

We thank the Australian Government, through the Australian High Commission, Solomon Islands and the Australian High Commission, Vanuatu, as well as the Australian Maritime Safety Authority - AMSA, for their support during this time.

As the response to the Nepal Flood continues, international disaster management expert Dr Ian Norton is calling for a complete systems reset in how the world reacts in crisis.

"Local responders, local doctors, nurses and ministries of health know their own backyard. In times of crisis no one is going to be able to fly in and take over with a better understanding of the situation than the locals themselves. The international community must focus on preparedness, with a willingness to support rather than lead," he says.

“A reset in how the international community responds has been needed for years, as localised as possible”.
