Critical minerals have been elevated to a central pillar of the Australia–Japan economic security partnership, forming part of a new joint declaration signalling deeper cooperation across supply chains, investment and project development.

For the graphite sector, the announcement reinforces growing global focus on:

✔️ Secure and diversified supply chains

✔️ Downstream processing capability

✔️ Value-added graphite products

✔️ Western supply chain alternatives

✔️ Industrial and battery materials markets

’s continued focus on advancing downstream processing capability for value-added graphite products and collaboration with key Japanese graphite expertise is aligned with the global push to diversify critical minerals supply chains.

IG6 made solid progress during the March quarter, advancing key elements of its production-focused strategy:

• MoU signed to establish European graphite processing hub with Alkeemia (Italy)

• Outstanding purification results (>99.9% TGC)

• Collie facility progressing toward 2027 start-up

• Expandable graphite studies nearing completion

• R&D and qualification work delivering strong performance outcomes

As we progress our plans to build graphite processing capability across Australia and Europe, we continue to target 2027 production.

As we draw closer to breaking ground on our commercial graphite micronising facility, which will join our existing R&D facility in the Collie Light Industrial Area, we’re reflecting on how far we’ve come.

Since establishing our presence in Collie, we’ve:

- Opened our expanded R&D facility

- Installed pilot micronising equipment

- Produced our first graphite product in Collie

- Commissioned our qualification-scale micronising plant

- Welcomed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and a range of senior government leaders to site

- Worked with more than 30 local businesses to help bring our operations to life

- Secured funding to begin construction of Australia’s first purpose-built commercial graphite micronising facility

Beyond our operations, we’ve continued to look for ways to add value to the Collie community. As a new industry in the region, we maintain strong relationships with local schools and the Collie Jobs and Skills Centre to help support future workforce development. We’re also proud supporters of the Collie Eagles AFL Football Club, the Collie Art Prize, and active members of the Collie Chamber of Commerce & Industry management committee.

The Western Australian regional town of Collie is a thriving industrial centre and the ideal location for International Graphite's downsteam processing and research and development program.

ECGA (European Advanced Carbon and Graphite Materials Association)’s latest white paper on graphite electrodes highlights a broader market reality: demand for critical graphite products is growing, but supply chains remain concentrated and vulnerable.

That’s where International Graphite sees long-term opportunity.

Through projects in Collie and Europe, we’re progressing downstream graphite processing capacity designed to support more secure, diversified supply chains.

is proud to support the scientists of the future and contribute to building knowledge in the critical minerals sector.

We recently provided graphite samples to the Teacher Earth Science Education Programme Ltd (TESEP) for inclusion in their Critical Minerals Kits.

The kits provide hands-on samples, giving students a practical way to explore critical minerals and their role in modern technologies.

continues to progress its downstream processing work, with Operations Manager Josh Hearse and Industrial Chemist Kathy Miller recently preparing and packing a graphite sample bound for Germany. The sample will undergo jet milling test work with Neuman & Esser, a German engineering group recognised for its expertise in high-performance grinding and classification systems.

Jet milling enables the production of ultra-fine graphite powders, with particle sizes under 10 microns. Materials at this scale are used in higher-value applications, including high-performance lubricants, conductive coatings, advanced polymers, and battery materials.

This work supports IG6’s understanding of how its graphite products can be refined to meet the specifications required by downstream, higher-value markets.

recently connected with Fraunhofer IKTS at Edith Cowan University’s “Ideas to Industry” Lab in Western Australia, where discussions explored potential collaboration.

The visit included a tour of the new lab facilities, followed by discussions outlining IG6’s projects and exploring potential synergies with Fraunhofer IKTS, part of Germany’s Fraunhofer network, known for translating applied research into industrial-scale materials and process technologies.

The engagement builds on IG6’s relationship with Edith Cowan University (ECU) and reflects the Company's continued focus on innovation and collaboration.

has received further strong results from graphite purification testwork conducted by ALKEEMIA at its Porto Marghera facility in Venice.

All seven concentrate samples - including material from Springdale - exceeded the 99.9% TGC target, continuing to validate Alkeemia’s hydrofluoric acid purification technology.

The results demonstrate the ability to produce high-purity graphite from a range of sources and flake sizes, supporting more flexible feedstock supply as IG6 and Alkeemia progress plans for a joint venture processing hub in Europe.

With capacity targeted to scale to 20,000 t/y by 2030, the partnership will strengthen supply chain resilience.

IG6 reports 99.9%+ TGC purification in seven samples, backing a 51:49 JV with ALKEEMIA to build Porto Marghera graphite purification hub, starting 2026.
