Strong tonal value contrasts are important in visual communications design. They not only help to convey communication objectives related to branding and marketing strategies but they also underpin legibility. This is important in respect to ensuring that brand name and text is readable and accessible to all irrespective of visual capacity.

Contrasts in tonal value are really important in applied design and design of the built environment. They help to create focus on key details in graphic and visual communications design, interior design and design for the built environment. Plus, tonal value contrasts contribute to ambience and atmosphere within the context of design. The type of contrast used here is known as Low Major - predominantly low key tonal values with a small proportion of high key values. The large range between low tonal values and high tonal values makes this a major chord. Terms borrowed from music - such as scales, chords and keys - have been found in the literature on colour for centuries.

More than any other paint colour, whites and off-white paint colours are influenced by other elements in an interior. The colour of ambient lighting as well as design elements such as timber and furnishings are subtly reflected by very light-coloured painted surfaces. White and off-white paint colours also have an undertone that may be warm yellow, ochre, or red/pink.

Interiors that feature warm whites may have a traditional feel, appear welcoming and suit cooler climates. Cool whites tend to have a crisp, fresh ambiance, complement contemporary interiors and suit warmer climates. Illustrations featuring image from Resene.
