Father's Day is this Sunday, and for a lot of families it will look like burnt toast in bed, a walk somewhere green, and lunch at the local cafe.

For separated families, the day can carry a bit more weight. Whose weekend is it? What time is the handover? What if Dad's day falls on the weekend the children are not with him?

If that is your household this year, a few things tend to help.

Sort the details early and put them in writing. A short text confirming time, place and who is driving takes five minutes and removes most of Sunday's tension.

Help the children mark the day for both parents. A card made at the kitchen table for the other household costs you nothing and tells your child they are allowed to love both of you.

If Sunday is not your day this year, choose another one. Children remember the pancakes and the bushwalk, not the date on the calendar.

Keep the handover for the handover. Sunday morning in the car park is not the moment to raise school fees.

And if the same argument surfaces every Father's Day, every Mother's Day and every school holiday, that is usually a sign the parenting plan needs consideration or revisiting, rather than a sign anyone is being difficult. Family Dispute Resolution is a calm, confidential way to work through that with an accredited practitioner, without going near a court.

I am Kelly Neighbour, an accredited Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner and mediator based in Sydney. Our mediations are held online, which means we work with families right across Australia, wherever you happen to be.

Wishing all the dads, stepdads, grandads and father figures a lovely Sunday.

We're packing our bags for Adelaide!

On 10 and 11 September, Kannen Mediation will be at the Resolution Institute Conference 2026, joining mediators, family dispute resolution practitioners, lawyers, judges and academics from across Australia and New Zealand.

This year's theme is "The Perfect Blend", and honestly, that's what good mediation is. A blend of listening and structure. Of legal knowledge and genuine empathy. Of keeping things calm today while building agreements that last for years.

So why does a conference matter to you?

Because every session we sit in, every conversation we have with practitioners at the top of this field, comes back into the mediation room with us. The latest research on how children experience separation. Fresh approaches to high-conflict conversations. Better ways to help families reach agreements without the cost and stress of court.

When we learn, you benefit. It's that simple.

If you're a fellow practitioner heading to Adelaide, come and say hello. We'd love to connect.

And if you're somewhere in the middle of separation right now and wondering what your options are, we're always happy to have a confidential chat.

Ever wondered why family mediation exists at all?

In this short video, Kelly explains where Family Dispute Resolution actually came from, and why it was introduced into the family law system in the first place.

Spoiler: it wasn't just to save court time. It was about giving separating families a better way through, one that puts children and workable outcomes first, instead of a courtroom battle.

Watch below.

You may have noticed a pattern in the news lately: several high-profile couples announcing their separations not with blame, but with a joint statement about staying strong co-parents for their kids.

It's a good reminder for all of us. However a relationship ends, the way you talk about it, especially in front of your children, matters more than the ending itself.

Family Dispute Resolution is built around exactly this idea. It gives separating parents a structured, supported space to work out parenting arrangements without turning the process into a battle. The goal isn't to "win." It's to protect your children from the conflict and help both parents move forward with a workable plan.

If you're separating and want a calmer path forward, we're here to help.

We offer a free 15-minute phone chat to help you determine if mediation is suitable. Book here https://kannenmediation.com.au/book-consultation/ or call us direct on 0455 238 884.

Ever settled a parenting dispute in court, only to find yourselves fighting about changeovers, holidays or school pick ups six months later?

You're not alone, and it's actually really common. Final orders solve the legal problem, but they don't always solve the day to day one.

That's the gap Parenting Coordination is designed to fill. It's a newer approach gaining real traction in Australian family law, an ongoing, child focused process that helps parents actually live out their orders or parenting plan, rather than ending up back in court over the same recurring issues.

I recently completed my certification in Parenting Coordination and I'm now offering it at Kannen Mediation. If this sounds familiar, I'd love to chat about whether it could help your family.

πŸ“Š New research reveals mediation is working and the numbers prove it.

Resolution Institute has just released the Mediation Audit 2026, the first comprehensive study of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

It's a biennial survey capturing the experiences and insights of mediators right across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

One standout finding? Mediators report overall settlement rates of approximately 88–90%.

What does that mean for everyday people? If you're going through a separation, a family dispute, a workplace disagreement, or a neighbourhood conflict - mediation offers a genuinely effective path to resolution, without the stress, time and cost of going to court.

This landmark report gives families and communities real evidence that choosing mediation isn't just an alternative to conflict, for the vast majority of people, it actually works.

πŸ’¬ Thinking about mediation for a dispute in your life? It might be more effective than you think.

Co-parenting after separation? Support is closer than you think..

For many separated parents, reaching a parenting agreement isn't the end of the story. Life keeps moving. Schedules change, new situations arise, and the day-to-day decisions can become a source of ongoing tension. When that conflict lingers, it's often the children who feel it most.

That's where parenting coordination can help.

Parenting coordination is a practical, child-focused process that supports separated parents to put their existing arrangements into action and work through the everyday issues as they come up, from holidays and handovers to communication and changing routines. It's ongoing, constructive, and designed to lower conflict and keep families out of court wherever possible.

The goal is simple: less stress for you, and a calmer, more stable environment for your children.

At Kannen Mediation, we're proud to support families across Willoughby and the Lower North Shore, offering a confidential, supportive space to help your family move forward with less friction and more clarity. We're local, and we also work with families online Australia-wide.

If you'd like to know more, we'd love to hear from you.

We are getting closer. In just over three weeks, Kannen Mediation will be at the Sydney Ageing Well Expo, and we would love to see you there.

When: 26 and 27 June 2026
Where: Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park
Find us at: Stand 305

Also: keep an eye out for our presentation on the Main Stage

The Expo brings together health, aged care and support services to help individuals and families plan ahead with confidence. It is free to attend, and a wonderful chance to gather information and ask questions, all in the one place.

Ageing can bring some difficult family conversations, around care, living arrangements, finances and changing roles. These discussions are not always easy, and they can sometimes create tension between family members who all want the best outcome. This is where elder mediation can help, by giving everyone a calm, respectful space to be heard and to find a way forward together.

If any of this is on your mind, or your family's, please come and say hello at Stand 305. We would be glad to talk through how we can help.
