In its June 25, 2026 release, the U.S. Army said its conditional lease awards, including one to Ioneer at Tooele Army Depot, mark the first time the Army has sited commercial mineral processing facilities on American military installations. The release states that boron has long been recognized as essential to national security because boron ceramics, such as boron carbide and boron nitride, are used in advanced armor, high-strength permanent magnets, semiconductors, and nuclear applications.

In this interview, Ioneer Managing Director Bernard Rowe discussed why the company chose Nevada for the Rhyolite Ridge Project. Rowe, who has spent more than 20 years working in the state, said Nevada regularly ranks as one of the top mining jurisdictions in the world. He noted that the project went from its first drill hole in December 2016 to fully permitted status within eight years, at a site with no significant prior mining history.

In a recent interview, Ioneer Managing Director Bernard Rowe described boron as a co-product of the Rhyolite Ridge Project, not a byproduct. About one-third of the project's revenue comes from boron, with the remaining two-thirds from lithium. As an example of boron's applications, Rowe pointed to boron steel, a specialty alloy that automakers use in vehicle structures.

🗞️ INDUSTRY NEWS UPDATE: Boron was added to the U.S. critical minerals list in 2025. Industry analysts have pointed to a related supply gap: neodymium-iron-boron magnets, used in missile guidance systems and defense electronics, require boron alongside rare earth elements. This means securing rare earth supply alone does not close the gap without reliable boron feedstock as well.

Rhyolite Ridge will become the first greenfield lithium mine in North America to deploy an autonomous haulage system, using the 140-tonne class Cat 785 Next Generation mining truck fitted with high-precision GPS and real-time analytics. Ioneer is working with Caterpillar, whose autonomous trucks have already hauled more than 2 billion tonnes of material worldwide across 67.6 million kilometres without a lost-time injury.

The U.S. Defense Logistics Agency consumed over 35,000 tonnes of boron carbide for military applications in 2023. With 73% of the world's boron reserves concentrated in Turkey, the Rhyolite Ridge Project holds the largest undeveloped boron ore reserve in the world outside Turkey and is the only fully permitted, construction-ready boron deposit in the United States.

Ioneer is one of four companies selected by the U.S. Army for a conditional lease award under its Strategic Capital Initiatives to develop domestic critical mineral processing facilities on Army land. The other three are Empire State Mines, a Titan Mining subsidiary, which would process graphite at Anniston Army Depot and Pine Bluff Arsenal; EnergyX, which would process lithium at Red River Army Depot; and REalloys, which would process dysprosium and terbium at Tooele Army Depot alongside Ioneer's planned boron facility.

Ioneer's planned processing facility at Rhyolite Ridge includes a sulfuric acid plant and related steam turbine that will generate enough electricity to power the entire operation, with zero reliance on the Nevada electrical grid and minimal CO₂ emissions.
