~ Indian Myna Workshop ~

Earlier this month I guided a dedicated group through the full mount process of avian taxidermy, working on the Indian Myna, an invasive east‑coast species and a much smaller, more intricate bird than our previous workshop specimens.

Across April 4–6, students moved through every stage:
skinning, defleshing, form‑making, binding, and finally positioning each bird into a natural display.
The Myna’s compact anatomy demands precision, and everyone rose to the challenge.

Presented in partnership with the UWA School of Design, whose support makes hands‑on natural history education possible.

Congratulations to all who attended your focus and craftsmanship showed in every final mount.
I can’t wait to work with you again soon.

✨ Wing Preparation Workshop ✨

December, 2025

Another belated share from last year.
We spent the morning at the ALVA Studio at UWA School of Design working through the full process of preparing owl wings for shadow‑box display a gentle, hands‑on introduction to taxidermy that everyone took to so well.

These owls came from a research project studying the effects of rodenticide on birds of prey.
They weren’t suitable for full mounts, but the wings were in excellent condition and made for a meaningful learning opportunity.

Students learned how to assess specimen condition, skin and deflesh the wing, preserve it safely, and finish with positioning and feather preening.

By the end of the session, everyone walked away with a beautifully prepared wings ready for framing.

Huge thank you to UWA School of Design for the partnership and for supporting this new collaboration.

✨ Very Belated Owl Workshop Post ✨

(November of 2025)

I’m finally getting around to sharing this one 😅

Our Bird of Prey Taxidermy Workshop wrapped up towards the end of 2025, and every single student produced such thoughtful, detailed work.

Owls demand a huge amount of patience, precision, and respect, and you all rose to the challenge beautifully. The attention to detail in these mounts was incredible.

A huge thank you to UWA for partnering with me once again and supporting hands‑on learning in such a meaningful way.

I’ve got two more workshop posts to catch up on, so stay tuned — but for now, here’s a well‑earned spotlight on this talented group.

(All owls used in this workshop were ethically sourced through a research program after confirmed cases of secondary poisoning. Their loss is a reminder of why responsible rodent control matters, and why education and preservation work like this is so important.)
