Why doing business with those connected to Country isn’t just important it’s essential

In today’s environment, organisations are increasingly focused on outcomes, impact, and accountability. But there’s one critical factor that often gets overlooked when engaging with Aboriginal businesses and leaders genuine connection to Country.

For me, this connection isn’t symbolic it’s lived, documented, and carried through generations.

I am a proud Yuin woman of the far south coast of New South Wales. My connection to Country comes through my mother’s Stewart and Parsons family, with deep roots across Wallaga Lake, Tilba Tilba, Moruya, Broulee, Narooma, and across NSW la Perouse to the Victoria border. This connection is not abstract it is grounded in lineage, responsibility, and cultural authority, carried through ancestors who were recognised leaders and custodians of this regions.

My family lines trace back to respected Yuin elders and knowledge holders — people such as Governor Stewart, Edward Walker (King of Moruya), John Pittman (King of Bodalla), Maria Billyboy (Coomee Nulunga), and Jane Duren, a pioneering Aboriginal rights advocate.
These aren’t just names in history. They represent continuity of knowledge, leadership, and responsibility to Country that still exists today.

So why does this matter for government, corporates and business?

Working with people genuinely connected to Country ensures that engagement with Aboriginal communities is culturally informed, respectful, and locally grounded — not generic or transactional.

Connection to Country brings credibility. It enables access to relationships, knowledge systems, and community trust that cannot be replicated without lived cultural authority.

When organisations partner with those who carry deep cultural knowledge and responsibility, the outcomes are stronger — socially, culturally, and economically.

Accountability to something greater
Those connected to Country aren’t just delivering services — we are accountable to our ancestors, our communities, and future generations.

Moving beyond procurement to partnership

Too often, Indigenous engagement is reduced to a checkbox or quota. But meaningful impact comes when organisations shift their mindset:

➡️ From supplier to custodian
➡️ From transaction to relationship
➡️ From compliance to co-design

Choosing to work with businesses led by people with genuine connection to Country isn’t just a cultural consideration it’s a strategic advantage.

At Ripe Mentoring and Ripe Hub, our work is grounded in these principles. We carry our old people with us in everything we do — honouring their legacy while creating pathways for the next generation.

If you’re serious about making a difference, it starts with who you choose to partner with.
